Introduction
The Chamber & Participation Team aims to deliver a comfortable, safe and efficient environment for Members, their staff and staff of the House to work in; as well as providing a welcoming and functional environment for all visitors to the House of Commons. The Serjeant at Arms is responsible for keeping order within the Commons part of the parliamentary estate. There are also some ceremonial aspects to the role. The Serjeant at Arms directorate is part of the Chamber & Participation Team.
The Role
The Doorkeeper team is a busy section which is fully committed to the professional working of the House. Event doorkeepers are responsible for maintaining security, staffing static security posts around the Palace and providing excellent customer service to Members and others. On occasion event doorkeepers assist with ceremonial duties and external events.
Some of the responsibilities for this role include:
- Maintaining the security of the House of Commons preventing unauthorised access into the estate and assisting with evacuation.
- To recognise every Member of Parliament and control access to various locations.
- Facilitating unimpeded and appropriate access by Members as required.
- Advising and assisting Members, Members' guests, Staff and the public with regards to access and access regulations.
- Providing security for functions in the House.
- Performing static and roving patrols.
