The Postal Museum is one of London's newest museums, opened in 2017. It features hands-on exhibitions exploring over 500 years of British social and communication history, and a subterranean Mail Rail ride. The museum attracts over 160,000 visitors annually, with online content reaching nearly a million users. It offers award-winning learning, access, outreach programmes, and a children’s play space called Sorted.

Community Engagement:

The museum's community engagement aims to inspire, promote wellbeing, and reduce social isolation through strong partnerships and needs-based activities. The new strategic programme will expand reach, inclusivity, and participatory practices, aligning with local council and community priorities.

Creative Consultation Project:

This project involves engaging local under-represented and under-served communities to understand their needs, barriers to engagement, and ways to overcome them. The insights will inform a Community Engagement Strategy and Action Plan to foster a participatory museum environment. The project will be led by the Community Programmes Producer, with support from senior museum staff and colleagues across departments.

Aims of the Research:

  • Find tangible ways to address these barriers.
  • Discover opportunities for participatory practices to support museum work.
  • Gather participant feedback on the project and collaboration process.
  • Test and embed creative audience research methods.

Methodology:

Propose a suitable qualitative and quantitative methodology, including creative research methods. Develop an evaluation framework collaboratively, conduct the research, produce a report with findings and recommendations, and present to the team.

Budget: £6,000-£8,000 inclusive of all expenses.

Timescale:
