Overview: Mount St Mary’s College, a leading co-educational independent boarding and day school, is seeking a dynamic and experienced Multi-Sports Coach & Athletic Development Lead to join our ambitious Sports Department. This role blends high-level multi-sport coaching with strategic leadership of the College’s athletic development programme. You will be central to enhancing physical performance, injury mitigation, and sport-specific readiness across our teams. A passion for coaching, a collaborative mindset, and specialist expertise in strength and conditioning and/or rugby union are highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Multi-Sport Coaching
  • Deliver inclusive, challenging, and engaging coaching sessions across a broad range of sports and age groups.
  • Coach and lead teams during fixtures, tournaments, and tours, with a focus on building technical skills, tactical understanding, and team ethos.
  • Contribute to sport-specific development, particularly in key sports across our sports programme.
  • Athletic Development & Performance
    • Design and lead holistic, age-appropriate athletic development programmes across the College, including pre-season and in-season phases.
    • Monitor and develop key physical performance indicators (e.g., speed, strength, agility, flexibility) using scientific principles and long-term testing protocols.
    • Implement injury prevention strategies and work in partnership with medical teams on rehabilitation and return-to-play protocols.
    • Deliver pre-match priming strategies and recovery sessions tailored to fixtures and tournaments.
    • Develop a long-term vision and infrastructure for athletic development, aligned with the College’s broader sports strategy.
  • Strategic Collaboration
    • Liaise regularly with the Director of Sport, Heads of Sport, coaching staff, academic tutors, to align programming with student needs and academic demands.
    • Develop links with external clubs, academies, counties, and national pathways to support students engaged in high-level sport.
    • Engage parents and carers with clear and informative communication on physical development, training loads, and wellbeing.
  • Leadership & Programme Management
    • Create and manage a comprehensive annual coaching and athletic development timetable, including sessions during before/after school, lunch breaks, and enrichment periods.
    • Take lead responsibility for the maintenance and development of strength and conditioning equipment and physical performance facilities.
    • Deliver educational workshops for students and staff on areas such as programming, nutrition, injury prevention, and physical literacy.
    • Contribute to staff CPD and represent the College at relevant conferences and performance networks.

    Essential Criteria:

    • Proven experience coaching a variety of sports within a school, academy, or club environment.
    • Expertise in athletic development and youth physical training principles.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative and student-centred approach.
    • Commitment to safeguarding, wellbeing, and the holistic development of young people.

    Desirable Attributes:

    • UKSCA accreditation or equivalent strength and conditioning certification.
    • RFU Level 2 (or higher) coaching qualification in rugby union.
    • Experience delivering long-term athletic development frameworks within schools or performance environments.
    • Familiarity with performance tracking systems and athlete monitoring software.
