Based at our Goodman Steel site in Reading, the purpose of this role is to lead the shifts within the warehouse, driving process and operational efficiencies to deliver business objectives, whilst ensuring that all Health & Safety procedures are adhered to. This is a hands-on role where you will also actively pick computer generated orders, operate saws, transfer steel to its location using forklift truck and crane, along with your team.
The hours are a weekly rotating shift pattern Monday to Friday 5.00 am to 1pm, then Monday to Friday 1pm to 9pm.
Specific tasks may include:
- Promote a safe environment and culture throughout the workforce, ensuring all activities comply with Barrett Steel Health & Safety policies.
- Achieve a high level of customer service and satisfaction, promoting the Barrett Steel Quality policy and local Operating Procedures.
- Pick computer generated orders with repetitive handling/lifting of heavy and large items.
- Accurately record stock movement and usage, along with product identification and use of measuring equipment.
- Work efficiently and effectively as part of a team and on your own.
- Operate saws and handle steel.
- Transfer stock to its location using Forklift trucks and cranes.
- Assist in the overall production and dispatch of customers’ orders.
- Promote continuous improvement throughout all aspects of the warehouse.
- Motivate, train, and develop the shift, managing its performance, to maintain an effective team capable of meeting its current and projected objectives.
- Ensure accuracy throughout the key areas of the warehouse structure.
- Work with the team under the direction of the Manager to develop and implement operational solutions without compromising quality or service while optimising cost.
- Coordinate shift activities efficiently and effectively.

Essential Skills for the role:
- Demonstrate success gained in leading/supervising a team & evidence of driving change.
- Excellent working knowledge of H&S (Ideally IOSH trained but not essential).
- Ideally understand or be trained in lean manufacturing techniques and in managing and developing effective team working.
- Excellent communication, planning & organisational skills.
