IT Support Engineer

IT Support Engineer – £60,000 – Barrow-in-Furness (On-site, 5 days/week)

Join an international leader in technology services as a Unix/Linux Support Engineer, keeping critical systems running smoothly for a major defence programme. You'll be hands-on with Solaris (10 & 11, ideally 8 & 9 too) and Linux (Red Hat) environments, solving complex technical problems and making a real operational impact.

What you'll do

· Monitor, maintain, and support Unix/Linux systems in production & dev environments

· Resolve incidents, service requests, and system alerts in line with SLAs

· Perform patching, updates, and routine system checks to optimise performance & security

· Troubleshoot software, hardware, and connectivity issues for end-users

· Manage user accounts, permissions, file systems, and security best practices

· Write scripts (Bash/Python) to automate processes and improve efficiency

· Create and maintain technical documentation

· Provide on-call support on a rota

What you'll bring

· Proven Unix/Linux support & admin experience

· Solaris (10 & 11, ideally 8 & 9 too) + Linux Red Hat

· Scripting skills in Bash or Python

· Experience with Ansible, Docker/Mirantis/Podman, and VMware tools (VROPS a bonus)

· Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and customer service skills

· Ability to translate technical details for non-technical users

Sole UK nationals only

Must be SC clearance eligible

Able to work on-site in Barrow-in-Furness 5 days/week
