Position : Concrete Specialist / Engineering Advisor Location: Remote Contract: Inside IR35 Our client is seeking an experienced Concrete Specialist / Engineering Advisor to join their team on a contract basis. The role is remote, with travel to Plymouth every 6 weeks. The Concrete Engineering Advisor provides specialist input to concrete engineering, ensuring compliance with quality control standards for concrete works on the assigned project. The role supports technical management to meet obligations and maintain control over quality concrete works on-site. Role and Responsibilities – Constituent Material Qualification: Review and accept the Contractor’s proposal for the Structural Concrete Constituent Material Supply and Concrete Validity study on the target mix design. Sensitivity Study: Review and accept the Contractor’s sensitivity study for batch mass variations and tests for lower tolerances (if applicable). Review and accept proposals for admixtures and self-compacting concrete qualifications (if applicable). Concrete Production Suitability Tests: Ensure no mix design is placed without undergoing suitability testing under site conditions. Changes to mix design are allowed only for admixture dosage. Precautions against Thermal Cracking: Review and accept the Contractor’s proposals to control concrete temperature (max 60ºC) and temperature differential. Approve reports on temperature and strength profiles, temperature differentials, and actions to control peak temperatures. Review the methodology for monitoring in-situ concrete temperatures with automatic logging every 30 minutes. Production Conformity Control: Sample review of conformity control submissions (initial Class 1 pour, then 5% sampled checks) and confirm Lifetime Quality Records as per the ITP/Quality Plan. Review and accept the Contractor’s methodology for controlling maximum temperature and early-age thermal cracking. Approve method statements for concrete production, transport, placement, compaction (with focus on slender sections), and curing, including equipment, methods, and personnel. Approve the Quality Control and Sampling Plans for concrete from production to completion. Review and approve the method statement for defect rectification and datasheets for all admixtures. Approve the proposed sequence of pours, including joints where appropriate. Qualifications: A degree in an appropriate engineering discipline (e.g., Civil or Structural Engineering) or equivalent. Chartered Engineer, registered with the Engineering Council, or working towards this status. Association with industry bodies such as the Concrete Society or Institution of Concrete Technology is preferred. Demonstrable experience in the design and construction of Quality Grade 1 Class A Reinforced Concrete Structures. Essential Experience Knowledge of operating in a Nuclear Licensed Site. Minimum of 5 years working with heavy concrete structures, preferably with expertise in concrete materials (mix development, defect remediation, site construction, etc.) and specification writing.
