To plan, manage and conduct inspections of trade premises and businesses, under a nominated range of legislative requirements undertaken by the Trading Standards Service, for which authorisation has been granted, including working outside normal

office hours, to ensure compliance with relevant legal standards and good practice. Businesses are risk assessed to ensure that premises posing the greatest risk are prioritised accordingly. The applicant should have experience in an enforcement role

and be able to handle difficult people and situations.

About you:

  1. Attention to detail is key to this role. To investigate and report on breaches of relevant Trading Standards legislation in accordance with the Council’s Enforcement Policy and to ensure that such cases are dealt with in a timely and professional

manner.

  1. Empathy and understanding of legislative controls is key to provide advice and assistance to businesses and consumers in a professional and comprehensive manner to ensure maximum compliance.

  2. Collaborative working, to liaise with partners and other organisations on a local or national level as appropriate, and to participate in such groups as developed by the Service to enable the flexible, creative and challenging delivery of the Trading

Standards Service.

  1. Work as part of a team to support and assist colleagues in the performance of their duties to ensure that an efficient and effective service is provided.

5.To deal with consumers, businesses and members of staff in a policy and courteous manner so that the Council’s customer care principles are adhered to.

6.To address health and safety policies and arrangements in a pro-active manner to ensure that a high standard of safe working practices is maintained.

What you will do:

Engage with businesses to ensure compliance with trading standards legislation in particular in the following areas –

  1. Feed hygiene – inspections to ensure that animals going into the food chain have been properly fed and have not been contaminated with undesirable substances;

  2. Petroleum inspections – inspections at licenced petroleum sites to ensure that the site complies with the licensing requirements and that the risk of any contamination of ground water, rivers and soil is reduced to a minimum; Explosives inspections – inspections at licensed premises to ensure that the explosives are safe and stored correctly to minimise the risk of a major incident;

  3. Corrosives Substances and knives – inspections to provide advice and guidance in the first instance and then work to achieve business compliance with the relevant legislation. To ensure that sales of certain products are prohibited and that knives and

other age restricted items are not sold to inappropriate persons.

  1. Vapes – inspections and potential seizures of illegal vapes. Consideration of premises closures in accordance with enforcement policy.

  2. Assistance with the investigations of other officers within trading standards e.g. fakes and copyright, product safety to name but a few;

  3. Illicit tobacco, assists officers in the investigation and seizure of illicit tobacco being cognisant of the signs of child sexual exploitation; illegal immigration and gangmasters.
