Technical Director – Lead Innovation in Carbon Compliance – £75,000 + car allowance + bonus – Birmingham (2 days a week minimum) – Right to work in UK is essential

Our client, a purpose-driven leader in the UK’s energy and environmental consultancy sector, is seeking a Technical Director to head their compliance division. This is a strategic leadership role, ideal for a commercially astute technical expert with a passion for delivering customer success and driving innovation in carbon reporting and compliance.

About the Role

The Technical Director will take full ownership of the performance, leadership, and strategic direction of two core technical teams, responsible for helping clients navigate complex regulatory requirements. This includes managing delivery of compliance services such as SECR, DEC, EPC, CBAM, MEES, and TM44 inspections.

This is a customer-facing role, requiring both deep technical knowledge and the ability to lead service development, build client relationships, and ensure operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Business Leadership

  • Own departmental P&L, with responsibility for budgeting, forecasting, and revenue generation.
  • Develop a strong pipeline of compliance services and maintain key technical partnerships.
  • Lead innovation and service development across all regulated compliance areas.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to integrate compliance services across business units.
  • Monitor KPIs for team performance, service quality, and customer satisfaction.

People Leadership

  • Inspire and lead two high-performing technical teams.
  • Conduct regular reviews, coaching, and training to support team development.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Manage all HR responsibilities in alignment with company policy and leadership expectations.

What You’ll Bring

✅ Skills & Experience

  • 10+ years of leadership experience in technical/engineering roles.
  • Proven track record in energy reduction and carbon compliance.
  • Strong commercial acumen and project management experience.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

✅ Knowledge & Qualifications

  • Exceptional knowledge of SECR, DEC, EPC, CBAM, MEES, and TM44 regulations.
  • Degree-qualified in engineering or a related technical field.
  • Chartered Engineer status (or working towards), ideally CIBSE/IET affiliated.
  • Familiarity with cost and contract management.
