We are working with a lovely award-winning independent publisher of world-class non-fiction, to find an experienced and pro-active Commissioning Editor, with a passion for well-written, thoughtfully designed books to join their team on a 12-month fixed term contract. This role can be worked on a hybrid basis. Our client works with expert authors and the best illustrators and photographers to visualise stories about life on our planet and the way in which we relate to the world around us.

They are looking for a Commissioning Editor who can consolidate and build on the company’s strengths in natural history and science and extend their range of trade titles. They are open to candidates from either a senior commissioning background, or those looking to make their next career move into a role with more responsibility and scope for development.

Working with a small and dedicated team, you will be responsible for the research and development of new book concepts, to include sourcing and managing authors, developmental editing, budgeting, scheduling, briefing designers and illustrators, liaising with co-publishers, and overseeing projects with their live book teams.

Some of the key Responsibilities will include:

  • Identify, commission and work closely with the best authors for the company’s proven subject areas
  • Research and develop book concepts using design and illustration to complement great texts
  • Take the initiative to identify trends and opportunities in the marketplace
  • Set budgets and schedules, and co-ordinate start-up meetings
  • Work with live book teams to ensure quality and timely delivery of materials
  • Work with the organisation’s co-publishers to manage review and approvals as needed
  • Build on the growing success of the publishing programme and demonstrate a commercial understanding of the company’s business model

We are looking for:

  • A track record of sourcing and working with high-calibre authors and contributors
  • An appreciation and understanding of design and production in illustrated publishing
  • A passion for examining topics in nature and natural history, popular science, history and culture
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
  • The ability to collaborate closely with colleagues in design, sales and rights to produce first-class concepts for an international market
