The opportunity:

Our client is currently recruiting for an experienced Senior Instrument Designer to join an engineering consultancy working onsite at a major pharmaceutical facility in Macclesfield, Cheshire. The role will support the local projects team through the provision of Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) design and consulting services. Working from a dedicated satellite design office within the client's premises, this is a key role requiring both technical expertise and excellent communication skills. The successful candidate will take ownership of multiple projects across the site and play a vital part in the delivery of high-quality, compliant, and timely engineering solutions.

Location: Macclesfield, Cheshire

Hours: 40 hours per week

Salary: £55,000 – £60,000 per annum, depending on experience

Current project portfolio includes:

  • Extensive flow and pressure monitoring upgrades
  • Effluent treatment plant control system upgrade to PLC
  • Process plant migration to Distributed Control System (DCS)

Your duties and responsibilities will be:

  • Collaborate closely with multi-discipline design teams and project managers to support the successful delivery of pharmaceutical projects.
  • Review and assess client requirements and translate them into engineering design solutions.
  • Prepare resource estimates for design-related activities.
  • Deliver scope documents, technical reports, concept designs, and detailed designs (typically RIBA Stages 2–4).
  • Support project delivery against time, quality, and cost objectives, managing multiple design packages concurrently.
  • Produce high-quality documentation in line with defined standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Liaise with third-party design and equipment vendors to integrate systems effectively.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines including Mechanical, Process, HVAC, and Civil.
  • Produce 2D design deliverables including:
  • General arrangements and equipment layouts
  • Cable and containment routing diagrams
  • Cable block diagrams
  • Instrument loop diagrams
  • Honeywell BMS interface diagrams.

You will have the following qualifications and experience:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in an Electrical & Instrumentation design role, ideally within pharmaceutical or process industry projects.
  • HNC, Degree, or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Strong working knowledge of E&I design best practices.
  • Experience undertaking full project life cycle (concept through detailed design and construction support).
  • Familiarity with ATEX hazardous area classification and Intrinsic Safety principles.
  • Experience or understanding of Functional Safety (IEC61508 / IEC61511).

It’s great if you also have the following:

  • Ability to undertake and interpret site surveys.
  • Working knowledge of CDM Regulations (2015).
  • Compex 12 qualification – desirable.
  • Previous experience working on UK pharmaceutical or regulated sector projects – advantageous.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body – desirable.
  • Strong organisational, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Comfortable working independently or within a multi-disciplinary team environment.

Software Proficiency:

  • AutoCAD LT (2D design)
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)

Working Conditions:

Based onsite in Macclesfield, Cheshire, within a major pharmaceutical facility. Operating from a dedicated satellite office run by an engineering consultancy. 40 hours per week with potential for occasional flexibility based on project demands.
