ALTEN UK is looking for a Senior Embedded Software Developer to join our engineering team supporting a long-term defence programme involving high-precision optical systems. You will play a key role in the development of embedded software for next-generation submarine technology. This role is suited to engineers who thrive on hands-on technical work, real-time system challenges, and building software that operates in mission-critical environments.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and integrate embedded real-time software using C++, targeting PIC-based microcontrollers.
  • Perform hands-on coding, debugging, and low-level hardware interaction to support system integration activities.
  • Ensure all software components align with project-specific and defence industry safety standards.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including systems and hardware engineers to deliver reliable solutions.
  • Work with DOORS to manage and trace requirements throughout the full software lifecycle.
  • Contribute to design reviews, test plans, and continuous improvement of development processes.
Qualifications Skills & Experience Required:
  • 5+ years' experience in embedded software development using C++ in real-time systems.
  • Strong background in microcontroller integration, particularly PIC-based architectures.
  • Experience working to safety-critical software standards such as DO-178C or MISRA.
  • Proficient in software development lifecycle activities including design, integration, and testing.
  • Practical use of DOORS or equivalent requirements management tools.
  • A pragmatic and proactive attitude with excellent problem-solving skills.
Desirable Skills:
  • Exposure to optomechanical systems or embedded systems within the defence or aerospace domains.
  • Understanding of low-level drivers, firmware, and hardware/software interfacing.
  • Familiarity with configuration management and debugging tools in embedded environments.
Qualifications & Security:
  • Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Electronics, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • Military/Armed Forces background in a technical role will also be highly regarded.
  • Must be a sole UK national and eligible for SC Clearance - minimum 5 years UK residency required.
