A global shipping company, based in Glasgow is currently seeking an experienced and organised Marine Superintendent to join their friendly and professional team.

The company caters to clients located across the globe which include, public listed companies, private family-controlled shipping interests and government shipping enterprises.

From their formation up until the present day they have maintained a vigorous proactive approach to the shipping industry.

Education and Training:

Minimum Chief Officer’s licence and relevant experience as Chief Officer on board. Other relevant training, qualifications and experience as determined by the General Manager.

Responsibilities:

Under overall supervision of the General Manager, and the day-to-day supervision of the Fleet Manager, the Marine Superintendent is responsible for the marine and safety operation of the vessels allocated to them. This shall include, but is not limited to, the following:

• Continuously monitor and be responsible for the vessels’ performance in regard to maintaining navigational standards on board, including bridge equipment training;
• Be familiar with all aspects of our Safety Management System in order to assist the Masters with their documentation presentation;
• Responsible for coordination of internal and external Navigation audits within the designated fleet.
• Monitor, review and action as necessary company forms and reports received from vessels through company SMS Database;
• Respond to Safety Committee Meeting Minutes.
• Review Hours of Work and Rest for each vessel and maintain a regular dialogue with the Master to ensure resources on board are effectively managed to minimise rest hour violations.
• Verify the correct classification of all Accident/Incident and Near Miss Reports received from assigned vessels;
• Conduct Incident Investigations including report writing and corrective action follow-up as necessary;
• Ensure vessel attendance planning in IMS is maintained up-to-date;
• Attend vessel for ISM / Safety / Security inspections, or arrange suitable alternatives, at least once per year to the vessels allocated to them;
• Attend vessels for Oil Major, Rightship, 360 Quality and CDI inspections and follow up as necessary;
• During vessel attendance, undertake onboard training and instruction towards Company procedures and requirements as required by audit, inspection or safety documentation;
• During vessel attendance, convene a Safety Meetings with all crew. Meeting to be documented accordingly;
• Perform recruitment interviews for prospective new deck officers.
• Perform interviews for candidates proposed for promotion to a senior deck officer rank.
• Conduct pre-joining briefings of Masters for their allocated vessels;
• Attend drydocks, as required, to assist Technical Superintendents;
• Act as DPA (Designated Person Ashore) for allocated vessels;
• Act as CSO (Company Security Officer) for allocated vessels;
• Act as Vetting Superintendent for allocated vessels (tanker vessels only);
• Act as member of the Emergency Response Team in the event of a contingency as directed by the Emergency Team Leader;
• Provide cover for any employee within their department as directed by the Fleet Manager.

The Marine Superintendent shall liaise with operational staff to facilitate the efficient and economic operation of the vessels which shall include the following:

• Liaise with the Technical Superintendent in the preparation of budgets, drydock specification, particularly in relation to hull or cargo/ballast tank coatings, cargo system repairs and navigation equipment;
• Liaise with Ship Manager and Personnel Department in the preparation of Insurance Claims and ensuring all necessary information and reports are available to enable timely preparation of reports and payments on account.
• Liaise with operations department to log, monitor or act upon, vessel deficiencies, non-conformities, and defects in accordance with Company procedures;
• Liaise directly with the QA Department with proposals for the development of the company’s Safety Management System and regular safety campaigns;
• Ensuring that all requisitions originating from either vessels or the Operations Department are processed efficiently and fully expedited until received on board.
