At Protein Works we rely on our IT systems to power the solutions across all functions at our new state of the art facility PW Campus. A Systems Engineer will be responsible for developing, installing and maintaining company-wide systems. Duties will include updating computer software, installing new hardware and troubleshooting technical problems. The selected candidate will need to demonstrate superb technical competency, delivering mission critical infrastructure and ensuring the highest levels of availability, performance and security. Qualified systems engineers will have a background in IT, computer systems engineering, or systems engineering and analysis.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Oversee the design and implementation of integrations between e-commerce, ERP, WMS, and internal business applications.
- Define best practices for API usage, middleware solutions, and data synchronisation across platforms.
- Collaborate with the development team to ensure robust, scalable, and secure system integrations.
- Ensure compliance with data security and privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, PCI-DSS).
- Monitor and maintain system performance, availability, and reliability across integrated applications.
- Identify and address performance bottlenecks, working closely with the development team to implement optimisations.
- Help develop and maintain security, backup, and redundancy strategies to minimise downtime and data loss.
- Work with third-party vendors to evaluate and implement new technology solutions where necessary.
- Conduct daily diagnostics and monitoring to identify and resolve system malfunctions.
- Ensure data flows correctly between integrated platforms, identifying and resolving discrepancies.
- Act as a key liaison between IT, development, operations, and external vendors to troubleshoot issues and improve system efficiencies.
- Create and maintain technical documentation and system schematics for integrations and workflows.
- Work closely with developers, business analysts, and senior operational staff to align technical solutions with business objectives.
- Lead discussions on integration design, best practices, and future improvements, ensuring alignment with overall IT strategy.
- Support and mentor junior IT team members, fostering knowledge-sharing and process improvements.
- Provide guidance to non-technical stakeholders, translating complex IT concepts into clear business insights.
- Participate in Agile workflows, leveraging tools such as Atlassian JIRA for project tracking and collaboration.
- Strong analytical skills for diagnosing and resolving integration issues quickly.
- Deep understanding of system integration patterns, APIs (REST, SOAP), and middleware solutions.
- Expertise in SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., MySQL, MSSQL, Big Query, or similar) for effective data management.
- Familiarity with message queues (RabbitMQ, Apache Kafka, AWS SQS) for asynchronous communication.
- Knowledge of API security and authentication protocols (OAuth, JWT).
- Experience working in environments with CI/CD pipelines, version control (Git), and infrastructure-as-code practices.
- Proven ability to liaise with technical and non-technical stakeholders, bridging gaps between business requirements and technical solutions.
