Job Title: Bank Recovery Nurse, Anaesthetic Nurse/ODP, Scrub Nurse, Hca, Theatre porters and Endoscopy Nurse

Bank Roles Available:

  1. Bank Recovery Nurse
  2. Bank Anaesthetic Nurse/ODP (Operating Department Practitioner)
  3. Bank Scrub Nurse (Plastic, Dermatology, ENT, Gynae, General Surgery, Laparoscopy, Minor Orthopaedic)
  4. Bank Endoscopy Nurse (Gastro/Colonoscopies, Hysteroscopy/Cystoscopy)
  5. Bank Theatre Porter
  6. Bank HCA Theatre /Day Surgery

Key Responsibilities for Each Role:

1. Bank Recovery Nurse for Day Surgery unit:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Admission: Review pre-operative records, assess patients upon arrival in the recovery area, and ensure all necessary documentation is completed.
  • Recovery: Monitor vital signs, administer pain relief, manage any post-surgical complications, and ensure patients are fully recovered from anaesthesia before discharge.
  • Discharge Planning: Provide post-operative instructions and guidance to patients and their families regarding care at home. Ensure all discharge documentation is completed accurately.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with anaesthetists, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals to ensure a smooth recovery process.

Requirements:

  • Registered Nurse with active NMC registration.
  • Proven experience in recovery care, HDU, and ITU. 
  • Experience in Day surgery, including patient admission, discharge, anaesthesia recovery and post-surgical monitoring of both adult and paediatric patients.
  • Strong communication and critical thinking skills.

2. Bank Anaesthetic Nurse/ODP (Operating Department Practitioner):

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pre-operative Assessment: Assist in preparing patients for anaesthesia, ensuring all pre-operative checks are completed.
  • Anaesthesia Assistance: Prepare anaesthesia equipment and drugs, assist anaesthetists during induction and maintenance of anaesthesia.
  • Monitoring: Monitor patients' vital signs throughout surgery, ensuring any issues are quickly addressed.
  • Post-anaesthesia Care: Assist in the recovery phase, ensuring the patient is safely transitioned from anaesthesia and managed post-operatively.
  • Patient Safety: Ensure a sterile environment is maintained and assist with infection control protocols.
  • Equipment Management: Ensure all anaesthetic equipment is properly maintained and available for use.

Requirements:

  • Registered Nurse or ODP with relevant qualifications and active registration.
  • Proven experience in anaesthesia, including operating theatre experience.
  • Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to stay calm under pressure.

3. Bank Scrub Nurse (Plastic, Dermatology, ENT, Gynae, General Surgery, Laparoscopy, Minor Orthopaedics):

Key Responsibilities:

  • Sterile Technique: Maintain a sterile environment in the operating theatre, ensuring instruments are prepared and sterile supplies are available.
  • Speciality Expertise: Provide assistance in a variety of surgeries such as  Plastic Surgery Dermatology ENT Gynaecology General Surgery Laparoscopy , and  Minor Orthopaedics .
  • Post-operative Care: Ensure proper disposal of used instruments and assist in the cleaning and sterilization of the theatre.
  • Collaboration: Work alongside surgeons, anaesthetists, and other theatre staff to ensure high standards of care and patient safety.
  • Patient Monitoring: Assist in patient positioning and ensuring comfort during the procedure.

Requirements:

  • Registered Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) with active NMC or HCPC registration.
  • Experience working in a theatre setting, with a strong knowledge of sterile techniques.
  • Experience in multiple specialities is preferred, with a willingness to learn new procedures.

4. Bank Endoscopy Nurse (Gastro/Colonoscopies, Hysteroscopy/Cystoscopy):

Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Preparation: Ensure patients are adequately prepared for endoscopic procedures, including pre-procedure assessments and explanations of the process.
  • Assistance during Procedures: Provide support to the endoscopist by preparing equipment, monitoring patients, and ensuring their comfort.
  • Patient Monitoring: Monitor vital signs during the procedure and assist in patient recovery post-procedure, ensuring they are stable before discharge.
  • Patient Education: Provide patients with post-procedure care instructions, explaining potential side effects and when to seek medical attention.
  • Infection Control: Maintain strict infection control measures and ensure the endoscopy unit is properly cleaned and maintained after each procedure.

Requirements:

  • Registered Nurse with active NMC registration.
  • Experience in endoscopy procedures, particularly  gastroscopy, colonoscopy, hysteroscopy, and  cystoscopy .
  • Ability to work under pressure, with excellent attention to detail and patient care skills.

5 Bank Theatre Porter

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Transportation: Assist in the safe and efficient transportation of patients to and from the operating theatres, ensuring their comfort and safety throughout the process.

  • Theatre Preparation: Support theatre teams by ensuring that surgical rooms are properly set up, with all necessary equipment and sterile supplies in place before and after procedures.
  • Equipment Management: Transport medical equipment and supplies to and from theatres, ensuring everything is ready and available for procedures.
  • Cleanliness and Sterilisation: Ensure the cleanliness and sterility of the operating theatres, including the safe disposal of waste and cleaning of equipment and surfaces after each procedure.
  • Assisting Theatre Staff: Provide general assistance to theatre nurses, surgeons, and other staff as needed, including helping with patient positioning, holding equipment, or preparing items for use during surgery.
  • Stock Control: Help with the restocking of theatre supplies and the monitoring of stock levels to ensure theatre areas are consistently well-stocked.
  • Health and Safety Compliance: Follow all hospital protocols regarding infection control, patient safety, and health and safety standards. Ensure all equipment is in good working order and report any faults or issues.
  • Ad-hoc Tasks: Support the theatre team with additional tasks as required, ensuring the smooth running of theatre sessions.

Requirements:

  • Essential:
  • Previous experience in a hospital or Theatre setting
  • Knowledge of hospital procedures and infection control guidelines is beneficial.
  • Awareness of basic health and safety standards and patient care protocols.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond to emergencies or changes in workload.
  • Physically fit and able to assist with patient handling and the movement of equipment.
  • Flexible and adaptable, with a positive attitude towards a wide range of tasks.

6 Bank HCA Theatre/ Day Surgery

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Preparation:

  • Assist patients pre-operatively by preparing them for surgery, including helping with gowning, providing comfort, and answering any questions they may have.
  • Take patient vital signs (e.g., temperature, pulse, respiration rate) and assist in completing pre-surgical assessments.
  • Help patients move to the operating theatre, ensuring they are comfortable and well-supported.
  • Assisting in Theatre:
  • Support the surgical team in the theatre by preparing and maintaining a sterile environment.
  • Assist the theatre team with positioning patients appropriately for surgery and ensuring their safety during procedures.
  • Ensure that all surgical instruments and equipment are sterile and ready for use.
  • Provide basic assistance during surgical procedures under the direction of qualified clinical staff.
  • Post-Surgery Assistance:
  • Assist patients to their recovery post-surgery, helping them become comfortable and monitoring their condition.
  • Provide support to patients as they recover from anaesthesia and ensure they are stable before discharge.
  • Theatre and Day Surgery Support:
  • Maintain cleanliness and ensure all equipment and supplies are prepared and available for use during surgery.
  • Assist with the cleaning and sterilization of instruments and surgical areas after procedures.
  • Health and Safety:
  • Ensure that all infection control procedures are followed and that a clean, safe, and sterile environment is maintained at all times.
  • Adhere to hospital policies and procedures to ensure patient safety, confidentiality, and quality care.
  • Work effectively within the multidisciplinary team to ensure high standards of care and smooth workflow within the theatre and day surgery departments.
  • Essential Requirements:
  • Experience as a Healthcare Assistant (HCA) within a clinical environment (preferably theatre or Day surgery).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Previous experience in handling surgical instruments or supporting theatre staff.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and procedures associated with theatre and day surgery.
  • Understanding of infection control practices and safety standards in a hospital setting.
  • Ability to take patient vital signs and assist with basic pre-surgery assessments.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a compassionate approach to patient care.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
