Our client, a reputable and growing name in the waste management sector, is on the lookout for a committed and experienced Yard Manager to take the lead across two active waste transfer stations. This is a fantastic opportunity for a hands-on professional with a strong understanding of site operations, health & safety, and environmental compliance.

Job Purpose:

To manage the daily operations of the waste disposal yard, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant handling, sorting, and movement of waste materials. The Yard Manager will be responsible for leading the site team, coordinating machinery and vehicle operations, and maintaining a clean, safe, and legally compliant working environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage daily yard operations including waste tipping, sorting, loading, and dispatch.
  • Supervise and coordinate yard operatives, plant operators, and drivers to maintain efficient workflows.
  • Enforce all site health and safety policies, ensuring a safe working environment at all times.
  • Oversee or operate various types of plant machinery (e.g., 360 excavator, loading shovel, shredder, trommel, attachments).
  • Track and record all incoming and outgoing waste streams with accurate documentation.
  • Perform regular safety inspections and ensure machinery and equipment are well-maintained and serviced.
  • Ensure full compliance with all relevant environmental legislation and waste regulations (e.g., Duty of Care, site permits).
  • Deliver training and inductions for new staff, covering site procedures and health & safety protocols.
  • Work closely with transport teams to coordinate skip exchanges and manage vehicle movements effectively.
  • Keep the site clean, well-organised, and ready for inspections at all times.
  • Support incident reporting, site audits, and any external regulatory inspections.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Previous experience in a similar supervisory or yard-based role within the waste or construction industry.
  • Strong understanding of waste handling, site safety, and relevant compliance requirements.
  • Competent in operating plant machinery (CPCS or NPORS preferred).
  • Good communication and leadership skills; able to manage and motivate a small team.
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritise tasks in a busy yard environment.
  • Basic computer skills for record-keeping and reporting.
