Jackson Hogg have partnered with a specialist manufacturing business in the Newton Aycliffe area on an Environmental Specialist position, reporting into the HSE Manager. As an Environmental Specialist, you will ensure the site, its process plant, employees and contractors operate in line with current legislation, guidance and procedures. The primary function of the role is to work closely with the environmental agencies and specialist consultants to ensure the plant and equipment are designed and operated in a manner that ensures our licences to operate are fully adhered to and complied with.
Key Responsibilities:
- Solid application and practical application of skill set on ISO14001 Environmental Standards.
- Work closely with internal and external monitoring and analytical companies/contractors and ensure corrective actions are taken based on test results, e.g., Legionella Control in Cooling Towers and Facility Water Supplies.
- Monitor and Maintain Environmental Consents in accordance with IPPC Permit in terms of discharge to atmosphere, ground, drainage and rivers.
- Work effectively with offsite waste and chemical analysis companies to ensure corrective actions are taken with plant effluent control system based on outcomes of test results.
- Ensure on and offsite laboratories and test facilities operate within ISO accreditation standards; ISO 14001, ISO9001.
- Rationalize and reorganise the waste monitoring programmes carried out onsite with a view to developing a centralised approach with KPI and Dashboards.
- Collect and control all required waste transfer documents and work closely with external bodies to ensure waste is safely and effectively managed and disposed of.
- Ensure site teams are supplied with systems and information required to protect themselves against chemical hazards as detailed in Chemical Hazards and Information Packaging (CHIP 2002).
- Develop and apply working systems and processes associated with Chemical usage and storage as detailed in Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH 2002).
- Compile and implement robust health monitoring and screening systems in order to demonstrate adherence to site requirements for Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Restricted Chemicals (REACH).
- Perform a lead role in the processes used to introduce and use new chemicals and raw materials used across the site and within the processing plants.
- Develop and implement strategies and processes to instil a Positive and Robust HSE Culture including a Behavioural Safety Element.
- Liaise with Occupational Health Provider, set up and provide recommendations for onsite health screening.
Environmental Specialist Requirements:
- High volume production/manufacturing environment.
- Experience of working on a COMAH site.
- Involvement with Emergency Response Teams.
- Working knowledge of environmental monitoring and waste management principles.
- Excellent PC skills to generate documentation and implement systems.
- Prepared to be flexible in working additional hours to suit business needs.

- Education/Qualifications: Degree in Environmental or Health & Safety related discipline.
