The opportunity:
Our client is seeking a Senior Seismic Civil & Structural Engineer to join our client's growing Energy division. This is an exciting time to get involved as we support a major client’s UK nuclear fleet through significant transformation and collaborate with developers of next-generation small modular reactors. Their work spans a wide range of areas—including Licensing, New Build, Power Generation, Life Extension, and Defueling—making our expertise highly sought after across the nuclear industry.
Our client's aim is to advance new nuclear technologies while ensuring the continued safe operation of existing power stations—playing a key role in helping the UK meet its Net Zero carbon goals.
In this role, you’ll be responsible for managing and delivering civil engineering analysis and design solutions on projects of varying scale—ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. You’ll work closely with our Operations and Engineering Managers to navigate the complexities of project delivery and ensure we deliver maximum value.
This role will be based in Warrington/Bristol/Newcastle/Gloucester.
Your duties and responsibilities will be:
- Take ownership of technical challenges, develop a strategy and implement the solution through engagement with internal and external stakeholders.
- Deliver technical solutions (analysis and design).
- Produce and review design deliverables (assumption notes, technical specifications and calculation notes, etc).
- Work with international SMR developers to pass through the Office of Nuclear Regulation’s Generic Design Assessment process.
- Review and justify design decisions to the ONR.
- Fulfil and take ownership of CDM responsibilities.
You will have the following qualifications & experience:
- MEng, MSc, BEng or BSc in Civil Engineering or other relevant degree level qualification.
- Chartered with relevant institution (e.g., ICE or IStructE) or working towards Chartership.
- Ability to work within a design team, and also able to collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams.
- Previous experience in the design and/or construction of civil engineering solutions using American codes.
- SASSI 2000, ACS SASSI, SHAKE expertise.
- LS-DYNA expertise.
- Concrete design expertise (American Concrete Institute ACI 318, ACI 349).
- Steel design expertise (American Institute of Steel Construction AISC 360, AISC 341, AISC N690).
- Seismic analysis (American Society of Civil Engineers ASCE 4, ASCE 43, ASCE 7).
- Understanding of the use of design tools within a BIM environment.
- Demonstrable experience in the design of heavy infrastructure projects, nuclear or regulated industry.
- Knowledge and understanding of UK Nuclear Regulatory process in the field of civil engineering is desirable.
The setting for the role:
Risks and Hazards are in line with working on a nuclear licensed site. These can include nuclear fuel, radiation, chemicals and gases, high voltage equipment, moving vehicles, flammable materials, high pressure circuits, steam, high noise and vibration levels. A full site induction will be provided and all safety requirements must be adhered to when entering the site.
