A well-known Japanese culture hub based in London is currently recruiting a Programming Manager.

In this role, you will be responsible for developing, coordinating, and executing the exhibition programme, managing relationships with stakeholders in Japan and the UK, and supporting logistical aspects of exhibitions.

The ideal candidate should have experience in exhibition production, project management, and communication skills in both English and Japanese. Understanding of Japanese culture and some Japanese skill is essential.

WORKING HOURS: Full-time role of 40 hours per week, inclusive of after-hours project-related tasks (evenings and weekends)
(*) Outside of installation periods, standard working hours are 8 hours per day, 5 days per week, with core hours from 10am to 3pm

SALARY: Β£36,000 – 38,000 depending on experience

Programming Manager Main Responsibilities:

  1. Developing, coordinating, and executing the exhibition programme under the supervision of the Head of Programming Projects
  2. Ensuring exhibition installations and de-installations are conducted efficiently and on time
  3. Liaising in English and Japanese with a range of stakeholders in Japan and the UK
  4. Liaising with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in relation to the creation of exhibition proposals and reports
  5. Building relationships with cultural and academic institutions, contractors and individuals in the UK and Japan
  6. Working closely with other departments to support content creation and delivery of exhibitions
  7. Ensuring technical and logistical needs of programmes and venue requirements are met
  8. Monitoring any assigned budgets
  9. Occasional support and delivery of other projects with other programming team members or other departments
  10. Coordinating with team members to respond to questions or requests for clarification
  11. Managing resource, administration, and marketing relating to programmes
  12. Preparing written programme updates, and programme-related information as required
  13. Sourcing products and services and completing internal financial processes in the correct manner
  14. Fully supporting the various needs of the programming team with regard to communication and coordination
  15. Guiding and driving development of occasional interns

Programming Manager Ideal Candidate:

  1. At least 3 years’ professional experience in a similar role with responsibility for executive-level correspondence, administration and logistics management and programming
  2. Educated to degree level or equivalent qualification in a relevant field
  3. Proven skills managing exhibition production and/or installation
  4. High level of proficiency in full MS Office suite and use of CRM and other software systems
  5. An understanding of Japan and Japanese cultures
  6. Experience of working with or in Japan
  7. Project management experience
  8. Budget management experience
  9. Professional level English language skills
  10. International shipping management including customs clearance systems
  11. Training/courses in art handling, project management, IOSH, logistics
  12. Knowledge of funding application process for artistic and/or community engagement programmes
  13. Exposure to the museum, arts, NFP, visitor attraction, heritage destination or tourism development sector
  14. Previous experience in a project-office environment
  15. Experience of working in an inter-cultural environment
  16. Business level fluency in both English and Japanese
  17. Understanding of Japanese culture is essential
