Our Public Sector client is looking to recruit a Senior Finance Officer on a Permanent basis.

Purpose of the role: Senior Finance Officers provide high quality and comprehensive finance support across the Council, drawing on technical expertise, knowledge and experience to add value, lead on the resolution of challenges and drive process improvements across the area.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for leading on specific service menu items and delivering to a high standard the full menu of finance service activities for the assigned team, including but not limited to: reviewing and challenging budget decisions, corporate accounting and financial planning, supporting capital and project financial planning and providing financial activity support to services across the Council.
  • Each Senior Finance Officer role supports one of two key areas in the Corporate Finance team.
  • Proactively develop skills, understanding and abilities in delivering finance services.
  • Take ownership of specific finance processes to ensure all officers are appropriately trained able to carry out these processes in a consistent and efficient manner.
  • Proactively coach and develop and quality assure the work of others on how best to deliver the service menu, standards and performance indicators, driving a step change in team productivity.
  • Deal professionally and effectively with all contacts from a wide range of people, including senior management where appropriate, using tact and discretion, assessing needs and re-directing enquiries, where appropriate.
  • Deal with escalations from officers from across the Council to ensure any issues are resolved and requests are completed in a timely manner and guide the resolution of issues.

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Relevant accountancy experience, working within a finance team related role in a local authority or wider public sector or not for profit organisation environment as part of Financial Accounting or Finance Business Partnering Teams.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience of working with senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent IT skills, experience and knowledge including Microsoft packages and specifically strong Excel skills.
  • Experience of supporting change / efficiency initiatives.
  • Knowledge and understanding of local authority accounting and reporting requirements.
  • Experience of year end closing processes and dealing with audit queries.
  • Experience working to deadlines with a high attention to detail and accuracy.
