Job overview
We are looking for highly motivated and experienced Planner Controllers to join the busy 24/7 Non-Emergency Patient Transport Service (NEPTS) at Guy\’s and St Thomas\’.
NEPTS is available for patients who cannot travel to or from our hospitals using any other method of transport due to their medical or mobility condition, or because their medical condition would otherwise worsen. All requests for patient transport are assessed on medical need. Transport is only provided for patients coming from their home addresses to our Trust sites in South East London, or patients being discharged from our South East London locations to anywhere in mainland UK.
The post holders will be members of a busy 24/7/365 control room and will ensure the day-to-day management of all patient transport journeys are in line with NEPTS key performance targets. They will ensure that all patient journeys are delivered in a safe and efficient manner whilst managing in-house ambulance productivity and subcontractor performance.
The post holders will be responsible for the management and smooth running of the controlling and planning function of the patient transport service, ensuring that all journeys are planned to take into consideration the service requirements (core NEPTS, High dependency, secure or paramedic) and the patient requirements (mobility, age, care packages, medical condition) assigning the correct resource to provide a safe patient transfer in and out of our Trust locations.
Main duties of the job
NEPTS Planners / Controllers are part of the Planning & Control Team that ensure the safe and efficient planning and allocation of over 1,000 patient journeys per day.
- Use the NEPTS CLERIC system and transport tracking system for the daily management of NEPTS resources.
- Responsible for dealing with all day to day operational issues and ensuring that processes and policies are adhered to and that targets are monitored and achieved.
- Responsible for ensuring that resources and standards allocated to the team are properly and effectively deployed to deliver agreed outputs determined by Key Performance Indicators and to operate within agreed budgets.
- Work proactively in ensuring all operational resources are used efficiently and identifying continuous ways of improving our patient journey planning and allocation protocols.

- Degree Or NVQ5 equivalent education
- Detailed understanding of the NEPTS system – CLERIC
Experience
- Substantial Planning Controlling experience within a patient transport function in a large organisation
- Previous experience in a supervisory role
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to carry out root cause analysis
- Developed customer care communication skills
Skills
- Competent with Microsoft products
- An experienced problem solver
- Ability to deal with conflicting priorities and to organise and prioritise own & teams workload and meet strict deadlines
- Highly motivated and ability to work independently
- Displaying a strong commitment to making service performance improvements
