Description of the role: This position is responsible for providing underwriting support to the Marine department in the London office, whilst developing technical underwriting capabilities focused on the Marine Cargo line of business.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform underwriting submission review, account research, pricing analysis, review of terms and conditions, sanctions screening, clash checking, assessment of exposures and completion of pricing tool and underwriting notes.
  • Perform underwriting referrals with underwriters following account analysis, including thorough reviews of underwriting submissions, including underlying or follow form policies according to underwriting guidelines.
  • Monitor relevant electronic placing systems and liaise with underwriters to manage required actions for slips, endorsements and supporting information.
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of policy and endorsement bookings onto the underwriting systems.
  • Maintain underwriting files in an orderly and consistent manner and in accordance with the underwriting guidelines, including filing and scanning of underwriting documents and correspondence as required.
  • Provide assistance to underwriters as may be required during underwriting process including liaison with Brokers.
  • Enter relevant data and maintain in underwriting systems, business logs and other tools as required.
  • Liaise regularly with internal departments including but not limited to the Operations, DUA, Finance, Legal and Compliance Teams as required.
  • Liaise with CAT modelling team in accordance with underwriting guidelines in respect of new and renewal account modelling and portfolio aggregate/roll-up queries.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of current affairs and market developments through individual research and team discussions.
  • Develop market relationships, represent and promote Allied World including through attendance at relevant client/broker meetings and market forums.
  • Liaise with brokers with respect to overdue premium; risk or premium bordereaux and outstanding underwriting information.
  • Supporting the Marine department underwriters by producing regular Management Information and bespoke reports as required.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications Person Specification:

  • Must be highly articulate, with good communication and interpersonal skills – required for liaison with clients, brokers, others teams within Allied World and building strong working relationships.
  • Holding or willing to study for professional insurance qualification, Cert CII (or equivalent).
  • Highly computer literate within MS Office applications and an advanced level proficiency using underwriting systems such as Genius and Openbox an advantage.
  • Methodical approach to work, strong organization skills; capable of dealing with tight reporting deadlines and conflicting priorities.
  • Good attention to detail and quantitative skills.
  • Overall, team player with collaborative outlook.
  • Willingness to work outside normal office hours as may be required.
  • Ideally with 2+ years insurance experience in a similar role.
