Overview of the role:We are seeking an experienced Principal / Lead Instrument Engineer to join and lead our dynamic instrument team. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and managing instrument engineering projects, ensuring technical accuracy, compliance with industry standards, and successful project execution. This role requires a deep understanding of instrumentation, control systems, functional safety, along with strong leadership skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively directly with Clients.
Key Responsibilities are but not limited to:
• Client Management:o On site support of client projects.o Lead instrument engineering aspects of projects, managing JBA design office designs.o Attend hazard study and SIL determination meeting as Instrument Technical Lead.o Coordinate with other engineering disciplines, clients, and stakeholders.
• Design and Analysis:o Review instrument and control systems designs. including supporting the generation of the P&IDs, creating instrument specifications and datasheets, specification and selection of instruments, loop diagrams and schematics.o Manage the Functional Safety Team, supporting, LOPAs and developing SRS, SIL PFDav calculations and verification.o Create testing and Commissioning protocols, including execution. o Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
• Technical Leadership:o The role will report to the Client Engineering Manager.o Review and approve technical documentation, drawings, and specifications.
• Quality Assurance:o Maintain quality control procedures for instrument engineering activities.o Conduct design reviews, risk assessments, and troubleshooting.o Ensure all deliverables meet high standards of quality and accuracy.
To be considered for this fantastic opportunity you will have:• Education:o Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Instrument Engineering or a related field.• Experience:o Demonstrable experience in instrument engineering, within COMAH regulated establishments.o Proven experience in managing project design teams.
• Technical Skills:o Familiarity with various control and interface systems (e.g., DCS, PLC, SCADA, HMI), including specification and integration design. o Experienced in field instruments and control valve selection, calculation, and detailed specifications.o Ability to constructively participate in risk management system sessions (e.g., HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA, SIL).o Experience with designing and supporting Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF), Safety Integrity Levels (SIL), Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA) and related activities, TUV qualification is preferred.o Strong knowledge of UK instrument codes and standards (e.g., BS61511).o Knowledge of COMAH underlying regulations, benchmark standards and relevant good practice is essential.o Proficient with Microsoft Excel and Work etc.
• Soft Skills:o Excellent leadership and team leadership skills.o Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.o Effective communication and interpersonal skills, including Client interactions.
Certifications:• Chartered Engineer (CEng) status preferred.• Relevant certifications (e.g., BS61511) are a plus.
