About Chubb

Chubb is the world’s largest publicly traded property and casualty insurer. With operations in 54 countries, Chubb provides commercial and personal property and casualty insurance, personal accident and supplemental health insurance, reinsurance and life insurance to a diverse group of clients. The company is distinguished by its extensive product and service offerings, broad distribution capabilities, exceptional financial strength, underwriting excellence, superior claims handling expertise and local operations globally.

We are looking for a Senior Casualty Risk Engineer to join a small and dynamic team responsible for assessing and managing risks to our UK and Ireland casualty book of business. Our aim is to help Chubb identify, win and retain profitable accounts.

Risk Engineering Team

You will join Risk Engineering Services (RES), an integrated service organization within Chubb. Our team of more than 400 engineers and industry specialists is located all around the world, dedicated to supporting our internal underwriting functions with profound expertise and risk knowledge. To supplement and further strengthen our capabilities, we are looking for a Senior Risk Engineer with broad-based knowledge and skills to join the UK & Ireland Casualty Risk Engineering team.

Job Description

  • Reducing risks to our profitability: Respond to requests from underwriters for written assessments of the products, public and employers’ liability risks to our casualty policies, taking account of Chubb technical guidance and underwriting appetite. Provide technical advice and training to enhance underwriters’ understanding of existing and emerging casualty risks. Ensure the efficient and effective delivery of our outsourced employer’s liability survey programme and online Health & Safety resources. Track risk improvements raised during the employers’ liability survey programme and validate the responses submitted by clients.
  • Winning and retaining target accounts: Support new business acquisition, including technical input to sales proposals, client and broker presentations and site visits. When necessary to inform underwriting decisions or to build client relationships, undertake site visits to evaluate health and safety and general liability hazards and controls. Design, manage and deliver health and safety and general risk management proposals for key casualty accounts. Deliver risk management services, either in person or by engaging and managing approved third-party providers.
  • Building Chubb’s market presence: Develop innovative risk solutions to increase client engagement and support the strategic ambitions of the business, e.g., product and service development, training programmes and communication of risk engineering capabilities to both internal and external stakeholders. Provide wider technical support to external stakeholders, e.g., training, audits, marketing presentations, publications and Guidance Notes.

About You

You have experience in casualty risk engineering or a related field, with an emphasis on relevant skills and successful project outcomes. Potential experience includes:

  • A similar casualty risk engineering role with an insurance company or firm of brokers;
  • A senior technical or engineering role in industry, for example health and safety and/or quality management, with experience of stakeholder management;
  • Working in a regulatory or enforcement agency where investigation and enquiry across a wide range of industries forms a core part of the role;
  • A demonstrable understanding of liability risk management and a strong background in another relevant discipline, for example health and safety consultancy, underwriting, broking, claims handling or loss adjusting.

You have a thorough knowledge of the principles of hazard recognition and risk management as these apply to products, general and employers’ liability. Ideally, you will have some knowledge of the principles and workings of insurance and the insurance market, but this is not essential if your technical ability and aptitude make you a good fit for the role. Your knowledge and skills mean that you are quickly able to understand a wide range of commercial and industrial activities, processes and products and to accurately predict the main potential for bodily injury or property damage that these present. Using this understanding, you are able to evaluate the strength of any existing risk controls, interpret and apply Chubb’s internal guidance and strategies for risk selection and management, and communicate this effectively to underwriters.

You have a good working knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and its practical application to common industrial activities. You can accurately identify workplace hazards and evaluate the adequacy of health and safety risk controls in achieving both practical harm prevention and legal compliance. Relevant qualifications and certifications in health and safety are desirable; however, candidates with a proven track record and relevant experience will also be considered.

You have excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills and can work with a wide and diverse range of people, creating positive and productive relationships. You have strong IT literacy and the ability to learn and adapt to a range of digital applications. You are competent to undertake basic risk engineering marketing and technical presentations to both internal and external audiences as required and can identify target audience needs and structure a presentation to suit, acting as a spokesperson for Chubb risk engineering in such situations.

This role is based in our London office at 40 Leadenhall Street. The work will involve both client site visits and days in the office as well as a flexible working arrangement that includes the option to work from home for up to two days per week. There will also be occasional overnight stays, usually within the UK, to support Chubb’s business needs.
