Our team works with leading private and public sector organisations, guiding them through the complexities of carbon compliance, energy efficiency, and climate resilience.
We design and deliver strategic energy, climate and compliance solutions for schools, public bodies, and commercial estates—turning ambition into action. As we scale our impact, we’re looking for passionate individuals ready to help shape a more sustainable built environment—project by project, client by client.
Role Purpose
We are looking for a key senior hire to drive our growth and impact in the corporate & public sector energy & sustainability market, bringing strategic capability, technical depth and cross-sector insight. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in non-domestic energy surveying, building physics, net zero strategy development and will be professionally accredited.
Role Overview
As Principal Consultant – Energy & Carbon Strategy, you will lead Nero’s technical and consulting function—driving energy and carbon performance across existing projects, new developments, existing assets, and corporate portfolios. You will support our clients with regulatory compliance, energy modelling, investment appraisals, and ESG reporting—translating complex data into impactful action plans and insights. This is a pivotal leadership role for someone who can bridge hands-on delivery with high-level strategic thinking, and who thrives on guiding clients through complex net zero, ESG and regulatory challenges. You will shape and deliver market-leading energy solutions, manage technical teams and client portfolios, and grow Nero’s reputation as a trusted partner in the low carbon transition.
Core Responsibilities
- Strategic & Technical Consulting
- Lead delivery of technical assessments, whole life carbon studies, and net zero strategies for new builds, refurbishments, and large-scale asset portfolios.
- Deliver and oversee regulatory reporting: ESOS, EPCs, DECs, SECR, and TCFD-aligned disclosures.
- Develop and implement climate risk assessments and climate resilience strategies aligned with TCFD and emerging investor expectations.
- Advise corporate and public sector clients on energy optimisation, decarbonisation pathways, and ESG integration.
- Building Modelling & Compliance
- Build and review detailed energy and thermal models (IES, DesignBuilder, H2X, TAS, TM54, SAP/SBEM).
- Conduct overheating risk and thermal comfort analyses (TM52, TM59) and provide evidence-based design guidance.
- Deliver energy strategies to support planning applications and meet compliance targets (Part L, BREEAM, RIBA 2030).
- Carry out energy performance assessments and reporting (EPCs, SBEM) in line with government and CIBSE standards.
- Data & Reporting
- Lead analysis and visualisation of performance data to inform modelling, reporting, and decision-making.
- Create compelling, insightful reports and dashboards tailored to board-level, investor, and operational stakeholders.
- Lead the delivery of clear, compliant climate disclosures in line with the UK Companies Act 2006 and TCFD recommendations.
- Ensure Nero’s reporting captures key climate risks, emissions, and strategy, supporting ESG transparency for clients, investors, and regulators.
- Stay ahead of evolving frameworks (e.g. SECR, CDP, SDR) to align with best practice and meet stakeholder expectations.
- Client Engagement & Commercial Growth
- Educate and guide clients on sustainability regulation, financial risks, and energy design best practice.
- Lead proposal development, pitch support and technical due diligence for strategic clients and bid frameworks.
- Work closely with Energy, Design and Project teams to embed carbon intelligence across projects.
