About the Role

We’re looking for someone who can provide pragmatic, business-focused advice while minimising risk, analyse metrics, and lead on solutions to key challenges. This role offers a broad mix of responsibilities, from recruitment and absence management to drafting contracts and streamlining processes, so being hands-on and adaptable is essential. Reporting directly to the Head of People Services, you’ll be the go-to expert for all things People. From coaching managers through policies to navigating complex ER cases, you’ll be a central figure in delivering a positive and proactive People experience across the organisation.

Experience working in or with smaller organisations is crucial, as is the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment where not everything is running like clockwork just yet. You’ll also lead and support a small team, oversee the employee lifecycle, and contribute to driving transformational change – all while championing Butterfly Conservation’s values of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be a trusted first-line advisor for managers and staff on everything from performance management and absence to flexible working and family-friendly policies.
  • Provide expert guidance on employee relations, ensuring legal compliance and a pragmatic, people-centred approach.
  • Manage complex casework (disciplinaries, grievances, redundancy, etc.) with professionalism and care.
  • Work closely with the Head of People Services to embed change, upskill managers, and drive people-focused initiatives.
  • Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and daily people operations with accuracy.
  • Help shape a high-performing, inclusive culture where people can truly flourish.

What We’re Looking For

  • CIPD Level 5 (or equivalent experience)
  • Strong HR/People operations background
  • Solid grasp of UK employment law and modern HR practices
  • Comfortable working remotely and independently – with top-notch tech skills
  • Excellent communication and coaching ability
  • A genuine passion for delivering exceptional People experiences

Why Join Butterfly Conservation?
