We are offering an Assistant Editor role substantively to work in BBC News Long Form Audio, editing and overseeing podcasts and radio shows. For this role specifically, you will be required to work across all BBC News Podcasts, including Ukrainecast. You may also be asked to work on other Long Form Audio Programmes.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Editing and overseeing the running of several podcasts and/or radio programmes - its sound, its editorial focus, its impact, and its wider content and audience strategy.
  • Generating creative ideas, and encourage and support the development of other people's ideas.
  • Managing a team of producers working across multiple programmes - bringing out the best in everyone, fostering good relationships, providing quality feedback, staff development, appraisals and setting objectives.
  • Working with on-air presenters to produce content and grow a programme.
  • Working with your Senior News Editor to develop your on-air presenter strategy.
  • Working with social media producers to develop the digital presence of the podcast or programme, and overall strategy.
  • Working with other areas of the BBC and external groups on collaborations, that are mutually beneficial.
  • Complying content and supporting teams through complex editorial and legal issues, with some weekend compliance.
  • Developing the digital brand of the podcast or programme.
  • Working with your Senior News Editor to grow your digital audience.
  • Work to a Senior News Editor and act as their deputy when required.

Are you the right candidate?

  • You will have experience managing teams of producers working across multiple programmes, supporting and cultivating production talent.
  • You will have a proven track record working to develop a positive working culture across a team or department.
  • You will have experience working with on-air presenters and developing on-air presenter strategies.
  • You will have experience being responsible for the editorial and creative output of a radio, podcast and/or TV programme.
  • You will have experience managing collaborations internally and/or externally.
  • You will have experience of working in news and current affairs, supporting teams through complex editorial and legal issues.
  • You will have experience growing and engaging new audiences on high impact programmes.
  • You will have experience managing budgets.
  • You will be able to demonstrate insights into the podcast market.
  • You will need to demonstrate an understanding of the wider BBC objectives and thorough understanding of the BBC's Editorial Guidelines.
