Currently, our London office is recruiting for an experienced Urban Designer to join our London office for a 12-month, fixed term contract (Maternity Cover). Successful candidates will have exceptional and proven experience working on large, complex projects at either a regional or national scale. Candidates should be confident when it comes to contributing to the overall success of the team, can work well with various stakeholders and can assist in supporting a team.
A minimum of 5 years’ worth of experience within a similar professional environment will be required. Essential requirements and responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:
- Uses advanced experience and knowledge of planning and design to proactively contribute to the overall success of the team by adhering to firm and project goals and standards of excellence in design, execution, and living design.
- Conducts data gathering, research, and creative exploration.
- Analyses sites, programs, and other key project elements through quantitative and qualitative means.
- Develops analytical and design drawings throughout the design process using analog (through sketching and physical modeling) and digital means (through digital analyses, sketching, and modeling).
- Strategises, outlines, mockups, and develops design documentation including master plan reports, design guidelines, and client-ready presentation materials.
- Coordinates all aspects of project deliverables.
- Reviews, evaluates, and integrates zoning and policy requirements into project design.
- Develops strategies for key urban frameworks and systems including but not limited to circulation, open space, buildings, and infrastructure.
- Performs advanced development calculations according to specified standards and proposed development controls.
- Leads project-related client discussions and presentations.
- Assists with project-related public discussions and presentations.
- Takes increasing ownership on tasks within project teams and studio activities.
- Implements responsibilities on projects, within the scope of schedule and budget, in an organized, timely and consistent way.
- Supports growth of others.
- Exercises creative judgment in all aspects of the design process.
- Proactively asks questions and expresses curiosity about the world of design and the industry at large.
- Participates actively within collaborative team settings such as: casual team interactions, design charettes, reviews, and pin-ups.
- Keeps open communication within the team and with designated team leader.
- Communicates ideas and thoughts in a way that inspires others.
- Effectively coordinates with other design partners and consultants.
- Self-checks work for accuracy, omissions, legibility, and for document compliance in accordance with the Project Delivery Manual.
- Completes tasks and responsibilities on projects, within the scope of work, schedule, and budget, in an organised, timely and consistent way.
- To be able to check and control work from subconsultants.
Required Technical Skills and Certifications:

- Site and design research

- Concept and detailed design studies
- Production of drawings and deliverables
- Hand-drawn and digital sketching
- Computational analysis
- Functional knowledge of 2D/3D production software (Revit, Rhino)
- Functional knowledge of digital sketching/diagramming software (Illustrator)
- Functional knowledge of analytical tools (ArcGIS, Grasshopper)
- Functional knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
- Functional knowledge of visualization tools (Enscape, VRay)
- Functional knowledge of physical modeling making
- Functional knowledge of presentation tools (InDesign, PowerPoint)
- Functional knowledge of GIS Analytics is desirable
- Bachelor’s degree in urban design, landscape, architecture, or related discipline required
- Professional Accreditation in one area of Living Design that interests you is desirable. These include: LEED AP with Specialty, BREEAM AP, WELL AP, SITES AP, Passive House Institute Certified Passive House Consultant/Designer CPHC/CPHD, or ILFI Living Future Accreditation
