We are seeking a dynamic and strategic Commercial Director to lead and support commercial, investment, and project finance functions within a leading clean power/battery developer in the UK. This is a unique opportunity to shape and drive commercial strategies that maximise revenue, create significant value across a diverse project portfolio, and transform assets into a high-quality platform. The role is high-impact, offering exposure to senior stakeholders and market leaders. As part of the Leadership Team, the Commercial Director will lead a talented team, engage in influential negotiations, and contribute to accelerating the energy transition.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leadership and Strategic Decision-Making
- Lead and support financial modelling at project and corporate levels.
- Oversee the preparation of financial analysis to inform key commercial decision-making.
- Work closely with the Senior Leadership Team, present recommendations to the Investment Committee, and support key investment processes.
- Ensure adherence to investment protocols for streamlined decision-making and alignment with corporate strategy.
- Contracts Management
- Develop, support negotiations, and manage commercial agreements for BESS projects, including EPC, O&M and supply chain contracts.
- Ensure contract compliance with legal, regulatory, and financial requirements.
- Coordinate with legal teams to mitigate risks and resolve contractual disputes.
- Track commercial performance metrics, ensuring financial targets and contractual obligations are met.
- Recommend optimization strategies to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance revenue streams.
- Offtake Strategy and Commercial Negotiations
- Develop and execute competitive off-take bidding and negotiation strategies, securing hedge, off-take, and similar contracts with market participants.
- Provide expert guidance on structuring optimal hedge terms, contract duration, revenue mix, and risk management strategies.
- Ensure all hedge agreements align with corporate strategy, financial goals, and market forecasts.
- Project Finance and Corporate Reporting
- Project manage and coordinate project finance transactions, including due diligence and advisor management.
- Oversee the preparation and review of loan compliance certificates and lender operational reports.
- Work with relevant teams to provide reports and analysis to the Board and Capital Partners.
- Team Leadership and Development
- Lead, manage, and mentor a high-performing team of investment and commercial professionals.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, excellence, and continuous improvement.
- Cross-Team Integration and Operational Excellence
- Promote synergy across project development, delivery, asset management, legal, and finance teams.
- Drive initiatives that enhance process efficiency and strategic alignment.
Candidate Profile:
We are looking for a self-starter with strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills. The ideal candidate will have:
- A minimum of 8 yearsβ experience in commercial, finance, investments, or transactions within utility-scale renewable energy (ideally BESS).
- Strong financial and commercial acumen, with experience in project finance structures.
- Excellent financial modelling skills, with proficiency in MS Office, Excel, and macro/VBA.
- Experience in greenfield development projects in renewable energy, particularly battery storage, solar, and wind.
- Proven expertise in offtake agreements across multiple markets.
- Strong negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills.
- A proactive, entrepreneurial mindset with a commercial approach.
- The ability to work independently, manage multiple workstreams, and lead a high-performing team.
