We are working with a fast-growing, client-focused business specialising in SDLT (Stamp Duty Land Tax) reclaims. Their team works across the legal, tax, and property sectors, helping individuals and businesses recover overpaid SDLT in line with the latest HMRC guidance. They are part of a wider group of professional services companies, and you will benefit from in-house legal, financial and marketing support. They are expanding their team and are now looking for a SDLT Reclaims Specialist who can hit the ground running, manage client claims from end to end, and ensure every case is dealt with expertly, compliantly and efficiently.
Role Overview
You will be responsible for handling SDLT reclaim cases from initial assessment through to submission and resolution with HMRC. This includes analysing title deeds and transaction documentation, identifying eligibility, preparing submissions, and communicating with clients, solicitors, and HMRC. You’ll need to stay up to date with the evolving SDLT rules and case law, and ideally contribute to internal best practice and process improvements.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess potential SDLT reclaim opportunities based on property transaction details
- Conduct detailed analysis of title documents, contracts and land registry data
- Advise clients (and internal teams) on SDLT rules and reclaim eligibility
- Prepare compliant, well-documented reclaim submissions to HMRC
- Liaise with solicitors, accountants, conveyancers and HMRC as needed
- Keep accurate records of case progress and outcomes using CRM systems
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of SDLT legislation, HMRC guidance, and tribunal outcomes
- Support business development efforts by advising on new reclaim opportunities or referral networks
- Assist in training junior staff or developing internal guidance documents as needed
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in SDLT reclaims, property tax, conveyancing or a related legal/tax discipline
- Strong working knowledge of SDLT legislation, particularly as it applies to mixed-use, uninhabitable properties, annexes, and partnerships
- Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills
- Strong written communication skills — must be able to draft clear, persuasive submissions
- Confidence dealing with clients, solicitors, and HMRC
- Familiarity with case management systems and Microsoft Office
- Ability to work independently and manage a varied caseload
Desirable
- Legal, tax, or accountancy qualification (e.g. CILEX, ATT, CTA, LPC, or similar)
- Experience in First-tier Tribunal (FTT) cases or HMRC dispute resolution
- Experience working within a high-volume, process-driven environment
- Commercial awareness of how SDLT reclaims fit within the wider property and legal markets
