Bloomberg runs on data. Our products are fueled by powerful information. We combine data and context to paint the whole picture for our clients, around the clock – from around the world. In Data, we are responsible for delivering this data, news and analytics through innovative technology – quickly and accurately. We apply problem-solving skills to identify innovative workflow efficiencies, and we implement technology solutions to enhance our systems, products and processes - all while providing platinum customer support to our clients.

As part of the Data Management Lab (DML) department, we are responsible for supporting the development, enablement, and implementation of data management best practices that enable the delivery of “ready-to-use” data.

As a Team Leader of the Semantic Modeling team, you will be pivotal in the development of our metadata products and processes at Bloomberg. Specifically, you will be guiding a team of ontologists in designing, implementing, and maintaining ontologies in order to drive data interoperability and semantic enrichment. The day-to-day will vary; some days you may be advising engineers on the development of metadata infrastructure and platforms. On other days, you may be meeting with Data teams to conceptualize their domain and promote best practices. Your work will touch a multitude of domains across Bloomberg, covering many departments like Data, Product, and Engineering.

We’ll trust You To:

  • Champion the development of ontological practices at Bloomberg.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team of ontologists and taxonomists to contribute to centralized semantic models and taxonomies.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into ontological models and solutions.
  • Develop strategies for the consistent application of semantic modeling and ontology frameworks across different business units.
  • Drive the adoption of best practices in knowledge representation, metadata management, and taxonomy governance.
  • Balance operational stability and adoption of new technologies during implementation, while challenging stakeholders’ past assumptions and promoting new ways of thinking.
  • Monitor the performance and quality of semantic systems, ensuring they meet organizational objectives and external standards.
  • Represent the ontology team in client meetings, workshops, and presentations, providing domain expertise and strategic guidance, establishing strong credibility with counterparts across the organization.
  • Stay updated on emerging trends in semantic technologies, linked data, and artificial intelligence to enhance the company’s capabilities.

You’ll need to have:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in ontology engineering, knowledge representation, or semantic web technologies.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience successfully leading and mentoring teams in a large cross-domain environment or through a transformational organizational change.

We’d love to see:

  • Understanding of Data Governance and Data Management, supported by industry certifications (e.g. DAMA CDMP, DCAM, etc.)
  • Master's or Ph.D. degree in Information Science, Linguistics or related field.
  • Experience working with Agile or Scrum methodologies.
  • Exposure to the Bloomberg Terminal and/or Enterprise data products.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of financial markets, and how Bloomberg products deliver value to our clients.

Apply if you think we’re a good match. We’ll get in touch to let you know what the next steps are.
