We are now launching our own laboratories to continue to drive forwards our research programmes. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to be part of the founding team in the role of Principal Scientist.
The successful individual will take ownership of the successful running of the laboratory and team. This position requires you to provide scientific direction as well as spend time at the bench when needed. The purpose of the laboratory is to develop novel biomarker assays to enhance health monitoring, with the potential for commercialisation, and run ‘omics assays as a service for academic, biotech and biopharmaceutical clients.
The role of the Lead Scientist is to oversee the scientific team operating at the bench, contribute to the scientific direction of the company, ensure regulatory compliance, manage the running of the laboratory and operate as a point of contact for clients & internal team.
Key Responsibilities:- Drive the set-up of new laboratory and office facilities.
- Drive and deliver a number of workstreams including the onboarding of GCP operations.
- Ensure smooth running of the laboratories; ensure facilities are fully operational, equipment maintained, laboratory supplies purchased and managed, any necessary operational systems are implemented.
- Oversee the scientific team to ensure their work is of the right quality, is compliant and delivered on time.
- Support the scientific team with development & running of assays and troubleshoot where necessary.
- Operate as a key point of contact for client and internal research team.
- Implement and manage business systems for GxP compliance.
- Health & Safety and document management, risk assessments, COSHH, and SOPs.
- Responsible for ordering, installing and maintaining new and existing equipment in the laboratories.
- Review consumable ordering practice and negotiate price to the best interest of the company.
- Co-ordinate with internal specialists the applications for appropriate licences such as HTA.
- Co-ordinate and monitor Occupational Health provision.
- In collaboration with scientists, establish and maintain inventories including clinical and non-clinical samples.
- Monitor, train and inspect Safety practices and Laboratories.
- MSc or PhD in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or a relevant subject.
- Experience of managing laboratory operations with the responsibility for compliance and delivery of services.
- Hands-on expertise in bioanalytical assay development (e.g., LC-MS, ELISA, NGS, qPCR).
- Experience in proteomic assay design, execution, and troubleshooting.
- Strong understanding of biomarker discovery and validation for clinical or translational research.
- Knowledge of regulatory frameworks beyond GCP/GLP (e.g., ISO 15189, CAP, HTA).
- Experience of establishing new laboratories is an advantage but not essential.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor scientific teams, including performance management.
- Familiarity with LIMS and data management systems for assay tracking and reporting.
- Experience interacting with clients and external partners, including project scoping and delivery.
- Strong project management and prioritisation skills in a fast-paced, startup-like environment.
- Track record of publications, patents, or contributions to grant applications.
- Experience managing vendor relationships, negotiating supplier contracts, and budget control.
