We’re supporting a growing team that’s looking for a technically skilled and detail-focused Electrical Design Manager to coordinate all electrical services design from RIBA Stage 3 through to Stage 6. This is a key role where you’ll take the lead in managing consultant outputs, validating compliance with regulations and project requirements, and ensuring that everything is ready for construction, commissioning, and smooth handover.
Key Responsibilities
- Design Management & Review
- Lead reviews of electrical consultant submissions, including layouts, schematics, and specifications (e.g. LV distribution, lighting, life safety systems, BMS).
- Monitor and manage progress against the project brief, Employer’s Requirements, and statutory regulations.
- Ensure coordinated design info is delivered on time and meets project milestones.
- Identify and manage design risks, gaps, and interface issues with architectural and MEP packages.
- Compliance & Regulation
- Ensure compliance with all relevant Building Regulations (Part P, L, B), BS7671 (18th Edition), and energy strategy requirements (PV, monitoring, EV).
- Oversee the resolution of planning conditions related to electrical systems.
- Coordinate fully integrated electrical layouts aligned with other disciplines.
- Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Collaborate with the client’s technical team to ensure systems support long-term building operations and FM strategies.
- Represent the project at meetings, mock-up reviews, workshops, and user sessions.
- Offer technical input on design changes, value engineering, and specification reviews.
- Handover & Quality Assurance
- Manage design queries and RFIs, ensuring closure and documentation through CDE platforms.
- Make sure commissioning, zoning, and operational readiness are reflected in the design.
- Support validation of as-built drawings, O&M manuals, and certification for final sign-off.
What You’ll Bring
- Strong technical understanding of electrical systems in large-scale residential or commercial builds.
- Great attention to detail in reviewing drawings and coordinating design teams.
- Confidence working across multiple design packages and managing consultant delivery.
- Familiarity with UK regulations and best practices, including London-specific energy requirements.
- Excellent communication skills and a proactive approach to solving design and coordination issues.
Preferred Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Building Services, or a similar field.
- Chartered or working towards CEng status (IET/CIBSE).
- 5–10 years’ experience in electrical design or design management within the built environment.
- Comfortable working with BIM Level 2 workflows and platforms like BIM360, Viewpoint, or Asite.
- Experience using Navisworks, Revizto, or other clash detection tools.
Bonus Knowledge Areas
- Familiarity with BSR Gateway 2 & 3 processes for high-risk buildings.
- Understanding of low-carbon systems (PV, ASHPs, EV infrastructure).
- Metering strategies (landlord/tenant split, MID meters, EMS integration).
- Life safety system design and commissioning (e.g., AOVs, fire alarms, emergency lighting).
