About the Role: The Honorary National Treasurer (HNT) plays a key leadership role in managing the financial stewardship of the Royal Naval Association (RNA), a prestigious charity dedicated to supporting the Royal Navy, its veterans and their families. As a Finance Trustee, you will be at the heart of RNA’s financial governance, ensuring the charity operates with transparency, responsibility, and integrity. This is an excellent opportunity to make a significant impact on the future of the RNA, while working alongside a dedicated team of fellow trustees and Shipmates.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Approve Statutory Accounts: As the Finance Trustee, you will review and approve the RNA’s Statutory Accounts, ensuring compliance with UK charity regulations.
  • Strategic Advice: You’ll offer expert financial guidance to the RNA Executive and National Council, helping steer the financial direction of the charity.
  • Collaborate with Key Partners: Work closely with the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC), overseeing day-to-day financial operations on behalf of the RNA Exec.
  • Sub-Committees Participation: You will be an integral member of the Finance and Admin Committee and the Investment Committee, where you will help manage the RNA’s financial investments and review annual budgets and accounts.
  • Liaise with Professional Advisors: Partner with external accountants and advisors to ensure accurate reporting and transparent financial operations.
  • Represent at Key Events: Present the annual accounts to Shipmates at the RNA National Conference, showcasing your leadership and financial insight.
  • Shape Governance: Be part of the Governance Committee and Governance Working Group, contributing to the strategic direction and future governance of the RNA.

What We’re Looking For:

  • A Chartered Accountant: You must be a member of a recognized UK accounting body.
  • Ideally a Royal Navy Veteran: While not essential, we’re seeking someone with a background in the Royal Navy, or a strong connection to the Armed Forces.
  • Experience in Charity Finance: Knowledge of charity governance and financial operations is highly desirable.
  • Time Commitment: Quarterly meetings of the National Council, usually online or in Portsmouth. Attendance at the RNA National Conference once a year. Quarterly meetings of the Finance and Admin Committee and the Investment Committee (either online or in London). Annual budget planning sessions and occasional meetings with the Governance Committees (ad-hoc in London).

The Future of RNA: The RNA is evolving as we redraft the Royal Charter with the Privy Council. This means exciting opportunities ahead, including a restructuring of the Board of Trustees where the HNT will become the Finance Trustee on the new Board.

Why You Should Apply: This is more than just a finance role – it’s an opportunity to be part of a close-knit, mission-driven team, helping to shape the future of the Royal Naval Association. For the right person, the role of Honorary National Treasurer offers not only a challenge but also the chance to contribute to a meaningful cause while working with a dedicated group of Trustees and Shipmates. We also pay expenses for all volunteer activity. If you’re a dynamic, experienced finance professional with a passion for supporting the Royal Navy community, we’d love to hear from you!
