We are currently seeking an experienced Technical Manager to join a dynamic SME organisation, part of a larger group of companies, offering a range of services across Rail, Highways, and the Built Environment. This company is renowned for its expertise in structural inspection and difficult access solutions, with a strong portfolio of high-profile projects across the UK.

As the Technical Manager, reporting to the Head of Inspection & Maintenance, this role will provide technical expertise to support business activities, particularly in inspection, materials testing, and maintenance, often requiring difficult access techniques. Responsibilities include assessing, estimating, and submitting tenders, ensuring technical competence within the team, and maintaining quality standards. The role also involves developing training programs, supporting audits, and achieving accreditations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Act as the technical focal point for staff and senior management.
  • Provide engineering recommendations for asset stability.
  • Develop and deliver training programs to maintain team competence.
  • Identify and mitigate technical risks and inefficiencies.
  • Contribute to tender writing, pricing, and submission.
  • Support external audits and accreditation processes.
  • Mentor team members and assist in their professional development.
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Essential: Chartered Engineer (Civil or Structural) with professional membership (e.g., ICE, IStructE).
  • 10+ years’ experience in Highways or Rail sectors.
  • Strong understanding of built structures, their repair, and failure mechanisms.
  • Experience in pricing, tender submissions, and mentoring.
  • Knowledge of Network Rail or Highways Standards.
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Desired: NEBOSH certificate, previous senior management experience.
  • Experience in asset management, ISO standards, and audit processes.
  • Familiarity with Rail/Highways structures condition indices.
  • Competence in training program development and delivery.
  • Network Rail STE competencies (e.g., STE4, STE2).
