To work closely alongside the homes manager to assist in the running of the home on a day-to-day basis, and to achieve the aims and objectives of the Statement of Purpose. To provide advice, assistance, and support to young people, safeguarding their welfare at all times. To attend to their practical, physical, and emotional needs. To act as an appropriate role model and to work closely with them to enable them to address their difficulties and achieve their optimum potential. To support Residential Childcare Workers and the team leaders in their role, including mentoring and supervision.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide care for young people through:
  • Work closely with the registered manager to manage the home.
  • Ensuring that each young person has an allocated key worker.
  • Ensuring that each member of staff is aware of each child's placement plan and their responsibilities for its implementation.
  • Attending childcare reviews and planning meetings to provide information and achieve the best outcomes for young people.
  • Directly work with Team leaders to ensure motivation and development.
  • Assist registered manager with day to day running of the home to ensure regulation requirements are met.
  • Establishing positive relationships with young people and always offering them unconditional and positive regard.
  • Acting as a role model and demonstrating appropriate ways of dealing with problems.
  • Helping young people gain self-control by challenging unacceptable behaviour and rewarding them when they should have recognition.
  • Ensuring that each young person's care plan is followed and updated as appropriate to reflect their changing needs.
  • Working in partnership with parents, carers and other professionals to safeguard and promote the welfare of young people.
  • Provide support to the manager through:
    • Supervision of staffing.
    • Shift Leading.
    • Day to Day responsibility for shifts/team.
    • Rota planning.
    • Assisting manager with professional audits Reg44, OFSTED.
    • Liaising with professionals.
    • To work on a rota basis according to the needs of the young people.
    • Attending professional meetings in manager's absence.
    • Ensuring placement plans are updated and overseeing risk assessments.
    • Admissions and Discharges.
    • Deputising in the Manager's Absence.
    • Out of Hours On Call Rota basis.
    • Complete incident de-briefs.
  • To act as a mentor through:
    • Taking responsibility for mentoring the staff team to mentor and helping develop their skills.
    • Establishing relationships which young people perceive to be positive, warm, and rewarding.
    • Support staff to provide advice, assistance, and support on a 1:1 basis.
    • Providing emotional support at times of difficulty or stress.
    • Being ambitious for young people, helping them achieve their goals and optimise their potential.
    • Providing support for young people in their education and extra-curricular activities.
    • Ensuring team leaders have created and updated placement plans, risk assessments and other relevant paperwork.
    • Empowering young people and facilitating their active involvement in the decision making about their lives and future.
    • Acting as an advocate at meetings where the young person is the subject of discussion.
    • Encouraging the young person to develop links with the community, attend activities and expand their personal social network.
  • To work as part of a team through:
    • Being aware of the aims and objectives of the home and working collaboratively with colleagues to achieve them.
    • Being a Leader and mentoring staff.
    • Attending/Leading staff meetings and making a positive contribution to them.
    • Actively contributing to the development of the team.
    • Receiving and storing information to improve communication.
    • Being willing to give and receive feedback on performance with colleagues and managers.
    • Being aware of childcare plans for all young people and providing support for colleagues by maintaining consistency in the execution of those plans.
    • Providing informal practical and emotional support to colleagues experiencing difficulties.
    • Attending and contributing to regular supervision sessions.
    • Safeguarding of Children and colleagues and referring on any causes for concern (Whistleblowing).
    • Being familiar with all policies and procedures and adhering to them.
    • Supervision of Staffing- formal and informal.
  • General:
    • Attending young people's meetings and contributing to them.
    • To assist the Registered Manager in the implementation of all aspects of the Statement of Purpose.
    • Driving company vehicles (current driving licence holders subject to procedures).
    • Receiving training appropriate to role and maintaining an up-to-date training profile.
    • Responsibility for the accurate maintenance of financial records appropriate to the duties of the post.
    • Responsibility for the health, safety and welfare of self and colleagues in accordance with the requirements of the home's Health and Safety Policies.
    • To carry out all other reasonable tasks as directed by Management.
