The Pirbright Institute delivers world-leading research to understand, predict, detect and respond to viral disease outbreaks. We study viruses of livestock that are endemic and exotic to the UK, including zoonotic viruses, by using the most advanced tools and technologies to understand host-pathogen interactions in animals and arthropod vectors. Our major strength in understanding the immune systems of livestock provides a platform to control current diseases and respond to emerging threats. This important research would not be possible without the proportionate use of animals, which are integral to the development of new disease control measures such as vaccines and diagnostics. We have an establishment-wide commitment to the 3Rs (replacement, reduction and refinement), high standards of animal welfare, a culture of care and openness.

Our institute is made up of a dynamic and vibrant community of staff covering a diverse set of chosen fields, backgrounds and experience. We all play a crucial role in furthering the institute’s aspirations, advancing the frontiers of science and knowledge through our excellent scientific research, knowledge sharing and contribution; with a real focus on improving the world in which we live. Our outlook is always balanced by our strong sense of purpose, values and behaviours and an unwavering commitment to a ‘one institute’ approach.

The senior postdoctoral mathematical modeller will report directly to the head of transmission biology, studying the spread of livestock and zoonotic viruses using a combination of laboratory experiments, fieldwork and mathematical modelling. This role is for the development of an innovative research programme in mathematical modelling of livestock viruses, exploring everything from within-host dynamics to regional spread. The post holder will work closely with a dynamic team of scientists at the institute to advance this research.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Responsible for developing a programme of modelling work on livestock viruses, which will include:
  • Identifying questions, with field and laboratory scientists, that can address mathematical modelling and the necessary data
  • Develop and implement modelling approaches to tackle these key research questions
  • Publish research findings in top-tier, peer-reviewed journals and showcase at national and international conferences
  • Secure additional funding to expand and integrate these projects into the group's ongoing research
  • Responsible for providing modelling and statistical support to staff and students, which will include:
    • Offer expert advice on mathematical modelling and statistics to staff and students as required
  • Responsible for managing staff and students, which will include:
    • Managing the postdoctoral modellers in the group
    • Identifying student projects, obtaining funding for them and supervising the projects
    • Being committed to personal development in this area, including attending regular training
  • Responsible for outbreak response, which will include:
    • Support the Institute’s response to disease outbreaks as needed
  • Contributing to the research culture at Pirbright, which will include:
    • Actively participating in the Institute's research culture through participation in meetings, seminars, and journal clubs
    • Where appropriate, take on committee roles, including representing the group in the group leader's absence
    • Engage in outreach activities, connecting with a diverse range of audiences

This job description is only an outline of the tasks, responsibilities and outcomes required of the role. The jobholder will carry out any other duties as may be reasonably required by his/her line manager. The job description and personal specification may be reviewed on an ongoing basis in accordance with the changing needs of the Pirbright Institute.
