We are looking for a researcher with a background in molecular ecology, either microbial ecology or environmental DNA, and experience in computational analysis and environmental genomics to support our bioinformatics and data analysis capabilities.
We will also consider candidates with experience in computational analysis and a proven desire to work in environmental science. A collaborative and proactive approach will be key to identifying opportunities to apply your skills across a range of topics and research areas.

Your main responsibilities will include:
Conducting research in environmental microbiology or molecular ecology based on the computational analysis of genomics data
Analysing and managing large molecular ecology datasets and lead on data analysis, interpretation and manuscript writing
Supporting the design, implementation and quality control of genomics data analysis pipelines
Collaborating with the wider UKCEH team to enhance our existing genomics research and develop your molecular ecology or environmental microbiology research
Contributing to securing research funding by supporting and participating in grant applications
For the role of Molecular Ecologist, we’re looking for somebody who has
A PhD in a relevant subject (i.e., Biology, Ecology or Environmental Science), or equivalent experience, in the computational analysis of genomics data
A (2:1 or higher) degree in Biology, Ecology or Environmental Science
Knowledge of key biological processes and DNA sequencing technologies relevant to molecular ecology and/or environmental genomics
The ability to analyse and manage large genomics data, design and implement genomics data pipelines
Programming skills in one or more of the following – R, Python, bash, C/C++, and Perl
An ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team and to present methods and results to diverse audiences
A publication track record – please include your most relevant publications in your CV
Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills
Desirable:
Familiarity with workflow managers such as Snakemake, Nextflow, or CWL
Interview Process:
If shortlisted for interview, you’ll be invited to a 1-hour interview, where you will prepare and present a 10-minute presentation. An in-person interview is preferred, which will enable you to take a short tour of our facilities after your interview. We can also accommodate an online interview via MS Teams video call, and give a virtual tour of our facilities, via a PowerPoint presentation.
The role combines onsite work with the possibility of working from home. However, due to the demands of the position, the majority of work is expected to be onsite (over 50%), with occasional full-time onsite requirements.
