About The Role: This renown Construction business are currently looking to appoint a Civil’s Estimator to provide support to their Estimating department. The Estimating department is responsible for the growth and delivery P&L and workload across numerous construction projects across Scotland, on behalf of both the public and private sector.

As a Civil Estimator, you will have a combined blend of technical and commercial skills and enjoy working as part of a team, developing project scope, programmes and cost for clients which are deemed both sustainable and within budget.

Key Responsibilities for the Civil Estimator role include:

  • Developing and producing the discipline specific estimate, quantitative take-off and Bills Of Quantity (BOQs).
  • Assisting in the development of and actively developing an understanding of the project solution, challenge where appropriate, to enable the creation of the estimate.
  • Engaging and coordinating with all Estimating disciplines and Engineering / Technical Specialists.
  • Conducting detailed cost estimates for a variety of groundworks projects.
  • Analysing project plans and specifications to develop accurate pricing.
  • Collaborating with project managers, engineers, and subcontractors to gather essential information.
  • Preparing comprehensive bid proposals and ensure timely submissions.
  • Monitoring and update project budgets, ensuring costs remain within agreed parameters.
  • Providing support in negotiations with clients and suppliers.

Requirements:

  • Composition and issuing of enquiries to the stakeholders, adjudication of returned quotations, preparation of bid tabs for supplier/subcontractor comparisons and recommendations for the basis of estimate.
  • Estimate work to be carried out directly utilising own resources.
  • Prepare estimate summaries and submission documents relating to; estimate reviews, cost assurance and client submittals.
  • Participate and support the handover of estimating data to delivery teams.
  • Engage and develop relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Communicate with the wider business including commercial, procurement, engineering and construction teams.
  • Build and maintain client relationships.
  • Support and provide input to the management of risk and opportunity.
  • Be aware of current health, safety and environmental requirements and changes.
  • Obtain feedback on delivered projects; incorporate lesson learnt within future projects and utilise cost data.
  • Support the development and implementation of continual improvement and increased efficiencies in the departments data and processes.
  • Input to and maintain quotation and cost rate databases, cost curve and cost models.

About the candidate: The estimating role forms an essential link in the pre-construction / tendering processes, requiring an effective communicator, with experience to interpret, interrogate and influence the design and construction of a project, whilst developing the cost estimate and associated deliverables.

Skills and experience should include:

  • Degree educated in ideally engineering or surveying or construction related.
  • Civil Works estimating experience utilising a computerised analytical estimating system.
  • Ability to complete first principal measurements and cost estimation utilising in-house resources.
  • Capability to estimate projects at different stages of the project life cycle, from high-level budget through to detailed estimates with quantitative take-off, working with the relevant level of design detail at each stage.
  • Experience sufficient to understand and influence the design and constructability of a project.
  • Experience with opportunity and risk management techniques and application within an estimate.
  • Expertise gained within a civils and groundworks environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to integrate and be part of a team.
  • Self-disciplined and organised able to manage work and to work to strict deadlines.
  • Commercially astute.
