The Department of Physics at Durham University is one of the top UK Physics departments with an outstanding reputation for excellence in teaching, research and employability of our students. Ranked in the top 10 in REF2022 in terms of power, 96% of Durham Physics research was considered either to be of "internationally excellent quality" or "world leading".
Working with the Director of CfAI, the post holder will be responsible for developing and executing the strategic plan for CfAI's projects and will work with senior academics and other stakeholders to ensure outputs from instrumentation projects are in line with University and Department strategy. The post holder will develop and maintain an operational structure that is in line with strategy, and recommend improvements to internal processes, communications, operational efficiency and the approach to line management of staff.
The post holder will provide the strategic input into the projects undertaken within CfAI, in particular the coordination of the resources of a project team to ensure the timely delivery of projects. This will include forward planning, resource projection, and the identification, recruitment and development of new staff. When required, the post holder will also be responsible for technical and managerial support on projects working closely with both the internal and external stakeholders. They will also support proposal preparation specifically in relation to the costing, resource allocation and management. When applicable, the post holder may also provide technical management support for specific projects, either directly, or through the management of dedicated Project Managers.
Specific Role Requirements:
- Travel independently between the Physics Department on the Durham Science site and the CfAI research Institute out at Netpark, Sedgefield.
- Travel independently to visit prospective partners and customers in relation to CfAI projects, some of which may be outside the UK.
- It is also possible that some travel may be required to attend project meetings and instrument installations, some of which may be outside the UK.
- Attend all training and development, as required.
