Oakley Thompson is a business venture between two Bus Engineers. Our Directors, Vince Thompson and Andy Oakley, met at Tile Hill College in 1998 as apprentice Bus Engineers. As an approved IMI Training Centre, Oakley Thompson offers a range of IRTEC accredited courses for both PSV (Public Service Vehicle) and HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) sectors. With a combined 50+ years in industry, you can be assured of receiving the best possible training from two industry experts.
What is IRTEC?
IRTEC (Institute of Road Transport Engineers Certification) is an independent accreditation that validates the skills and competence of technicians working in the maintenance of commercial vehicles, trailers, and passenger-carrying vehicles. IRTEC licences are valid for 5 years and assess both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of individuals to ensure they meet industry standards.
IRTEC Service Maintenance Technician Route
Intended for:
- Large Commercial Vehicle maintenance
- Bus and Coach maintenance
- Heavy Vehicle Trailer maintenance
Skills and Knowledge Requirements:
- Minimum 2 years industrial experience OR Level 2 S/NVQ (or equivalent) + 1 year relevant experience
- Ability to work unsupervised, ideally in full-time employment
Assessment:
- Theory Test: 30 Questions on underpinning knowledge of vehicle maintenance, conducted at an IRTEC-approved assessment centre
- Practical Assessments (within 12 months of theory test):
- Braking Systems: 50 mins
- Engine Electrical Systems: 50 mins
- Engine Mechanical Systems: 50 mins
- Hydraulic/Pneumatic Systems: 50 mins
- Wheel Alignment & Steering: 50 mins
