If so, we are inviting applications for a full-time post as a Consultant Neurologist at Wye Valley NHS Trust. The successful candidate will join the friendly team which consists of 1 full-time Consultant and Clinical Lead for the service and 1 part-time Hereford based Consultant (as part of a Service Level Agreement through our close working with University Hospitals, Birmingham) based at the County Hospital in Hereford. Most areas of special interest can be accommodated and we would welcome applicants who wish to consider part-time or flexible working.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide a high-quality service in Neurology to the patients of Herefordshire and the surrounding area, using evidence-based guidelines and clinical governance structures.
  • To advise clinical colleagues on matters within his/her sphere of expertise.
  • To offer advice/support/education to medical, nursing, managerial and other staff on appropriate matters.
  • To carry out medical teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required.
  • To contribute to postgraduate and continuing medical education activity including Continuing Professional Development.
  • To contribute to the training of nurses, paramedical, scientific and technical staff.
  • To contribute to the management process within the Trust through participation in planning, project or liaison groups as appropriate.
  • To support the Clinical Directors and General Manager with appropriate advice regarding the development of Neurology and Medical services at Wye Valley NHS Trust.

Job responsibilities

We are seeking to recruit to the role of full-time Consultant in Neurology (10 PAs) to support the current delivery of both outpatient clinics and inpatient support. Development of specialist interests will be encouraged. We would also welcome applicants who wish to consider part-time or flexible working. We also welcome applicants who would like the opportunity to work one day per week at a Tertiary Centre. We would welcome the opportunity to speak to any interested candidates about their preferred job plan to ensure a full work-life balance.

Person Specification

Education & Qualifications

  • Essential: Entry on GMC Specialist Register or Eligibility to enter it within 6 months from the date of the interview and hold a license to practice MRCP or equivalent postgraduate general medical experience MB ChB or equivalent.
  • Desirable: Postgraduate qualifications MSc, MD, PhD, Masters in Education.

Training

  • Essential: Training and experience equivalent to that required for UK CCT (or within 6 months of it being issued) CESR.

Experience & Knowledge

  • Essential: Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in all aspects of general neurology. Comprehensive knowledge in Neurology and ability to offer expert clinical opinion in the management of acute and chronic neurological disorders. Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.
  • Desirable: An interest in a sub-specialist field within neurology.

Clinical Governance

  • Essential: Able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance. Knowledge of principles of evidence-based practice. Knowledge of principles of clinical audit and direct experience of audit. An interest which improves the Neurology pathway in all aspects.
  • Desirable: Evidence of implementing relevant evidence-based medicine. Implementation of evidence-based guidelines. Participation in relevant national audits.

Research

  • Essential: Knowledge of the principles of research and ability to interpret and apply clinical research. Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems.
  • Desirable: Recent published clinical research in peer-reviewed journal. Ability to supervise postgraduate research.

Management & Administrative Experience

  • Essential: Evidence of management experience or training. Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service. Ability to manage and lead department. Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities and waiting lists.
  • Desirable: Ability to share departmental management duties e.g. staff rotas.

Personal Attributes

  • Essential: Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multi-disciplinary basis with all levels of staff. Ability to organise and prioritise workload. Ability to work under pressure and cope with setbacks. Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national level. Caring, honest and reliable. Process and enquiring and critical approach to work.
