Job Description
About the Role:
We are looking for an experienced and highly analytical Senior Bioinformatician/Data Scientist to join our research and development team. In this role, you will drive the discovery, development, and curation of gene-editing systems and mobile genetic elements (MGEs), with an emphasis on therapeutic applications. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of bioinformatics, particularly within large-scale metagenomic and microbiome data projects, as we explore new possibilities in gene-editing, viral integration, and secondary metabolite discovery.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead research and curation efforts focused on gene-editing systems, moving beyond CRISPR screening to identify and annotate novel gene-editing mechanisms.
- Apply advanced bioinformatics methods to catalog and characterize diverse gene-editing systems, with a focus on their therapeutic potential.
- Identify, curate, and analyze MGEs and viral integration events within metagenomic datasets.
- Develop methods to track and characterize these elements, enhancing understanding of their roles in gene mobility, genomic instability, and therapeutic applications.
- Conduct comprehensive analyses on large metagenomic and microbiome datasets, utilizing robust computational tools to process and interpret complex data.
- Generate insights into the microbial ecology, gene function, and genomic context of potential therapeutic elements within microbial communities.
- Drive research with a therapeutic focus, identifying gene-editing systems or MGEs that can potentially be harnessed for human health applications.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to translate findings from metagenomic and gene-editing studies into viable therapeutic candidates.
- Nice to Have – Biosynthetic Gene Clusters (BGCs) and Secondary Metabolite Discovery:
- Conduct research in BGCs or secondary metabolite discovery, contributing to the exploration of bioactive compounds within microbial communities.
- Utilize bioinformatic tools to identify BGCs within metagenomic datasets, exploring secondary metabolites that may possess therapeutic properties.
Qualifications:
- PhD or Master’s in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, or a related field with strong expertise in gene-editing systems, MGEs, or viral integration research.
- Extensive experience in large-scale metagenomic or microbiome data analysis.
- Proven background in developing bioinformatic methods or pipelines for discovery and curation of gene-editing systems beyond traditional CRISPR applications.
- Knowledge of gene-editing therapeutic applications, MGE biology, and viral integration, with an interest in translational research.
- Proficiency in bioinformatics programming languages (Python, R, or similar) and experience with large data management and workflow development.
- Nice to have: Background in BGC or secondary metabolite discovery within metagenomic datasets.
This is a unique opportunity to play a critical role in pioneering therapeutic discoveries in gene editing and microbial genomics. If you’re passionate about advancing bioinformatics for impactful health applications, we would love to hear from you!
