On behalf of our clients, we seek a Livestock Manager who will be a critical driver in optimising the farm business’s profitability by efficiently and sustainably increasing production. Working closely with the farm owner to oversee all operations on the farm, you will take a hands-on role and share in key decision-making. To achieve this, a conscientious, self-motivated work ethic and the desire to take ownership of the farm's business success are essential.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Cattle husbandry, including marking, feeding, drenching, weaning, and general animal health.
  • Grazing management and pasture establishment.
  • Construction and maintenance of fencing.
  • Machinery, equipment, and infrastructure maintenance.
  • Regular reporting to owners as required, including reporting on livestock, pasture, and machinery.
  • Working alongside owners to develop and plan farm programs and calendars.
  • Liaising with contractors.
  • Managing staff.

The Employer: Our clients are a family-owned, highly productive, and well-appointed beef breeding and finishing operation. They run 2,000 breeding cows over 4,500 acres on productive volcanic heavy clay and loam soils in the high-rainfall area of South-West Victoria. Cows are joined via natural mating and artificial insemination, and weaners are fed to 16 months of age to be bought by feedlots and backgrounders. They have a strong focus on optimising production per hectare across their properties. With scope for gains in production and efficiencies through genetics, pasture, and paddock management, the aim of their business is to profitably improve and evolve in line with and beyond the industry standard.

The Offer: An attractive salary package is available for negotiation with the successful candidate. Along with a high level of operational freedom and discretion, you will be provided with a renovated three-bedroom home with lovely views of the surrounding farmland and forest. The house features reverse-cycle air conditioning and a wood heater, keeping you comfortable year-round. The Heywood school bus service stops right at your front door. A work vehicle will be provided for work-related travel for your convenience. You will be 5 minutes drive from the charming small town of Heywood, which offers key amenities such as a supermarket, hospital, post office, primary and secondary schools, and a pub. The major regional centre of Portland, a renowned fishing destination with beautiful beaches and coastline, is 30 kilometres away. Hamilton, another significant centre, is 40 minutes away. There are good private schools, major supermarkets, and other amenities here.

The Ideal Candidate: We are looking for a dedicated and self-motivated individual to fill the position of Livestock Manager. The opportunity for training and development in these areas is available for an enthusiastic candidate who is willing to learn. • Experience with rotational grazing and pasture improvement.
  • Fencing and general machinery and infrastructure maintenance knowledge.
  • Prior experience in the cattle industry will be highly regarded.
