The role:

As Head of Fleet Capability within our Naval Nuclear business, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary where you will be key to the business. Day to day, you will be a key player supporting the Director of Fleet Engineering, to establish and maintain a comprehensive capability management strategy for all departments within Fleet Operations. This includes creating the necessary organisational structure and aligning training and capability management with the overarching strategies of Clyde and Babcock Group. The role addresses both immediate and future capability needs of the Fleet Directorate.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Standardising training delivery, management, and reporting methods, including at our state of the art Centre of Operational Excellence offsite Hub once established.
  • Setting key performance indicators and a reporting process to help senior leaders understand the status of suitably qualified and experienced individuals within their organisation.
  • Identifying and addressing gaps against current and future requirements, as well as developing and coordinating gap reduction strategies for new vessel integration across all departments.
  • Developing and implementing a comprehensive capability management strategy that aligns with group and global directions, whilst ensuring the immediate and future needs of the Fleet Directorate are met.
  • Establishing and maintaining a Competence Management System, including the ability to store competence records, providing assurance staff hold the required qualifications and experience for conducting all safety critical operations.
  • Ensuring the Fleet Operations Mandatory & Competence requirements are maintained at a safe to operate level, providing the means of tracking, monitoring, and taking action in a systematic way to deliver improvements where required across all.
  • Delivering process, technical and business improvement using continuous improvement techniques to accelerate delivery in key business areas.
  • Measuring Departmental performance and adoption of best practice by the introduction of innovative technological solutions (people, systems, and technology).
  • Ensuring the department keeps pace with industry and competitors within the remit of skills development and engineering standards, and that training and documentation used in the development of training staff (e.g., maintenance procedures) are fit for purpose and reflect the latest industry standards.

Essential experience:

  • Proven ability to analyse resource and capability gaps within an engineering or manufacturing environment and ensure continuing availability of qualified resources to deliver gold standard output.
  • Experience of the delivery of engineering and technical capabilities within a complex organisation - applications from high integrity sectors such as Aviation, Defence, Marine, Oil & Gas, Rail or similar are welcome.
  • Forward thinking – able to understand, adapt and deliver continuous improvements to ensure future qualified resource availability including technology adoption and new best practice training methodologies.
  • Commercial acumen, budgetary control experience.
  • Passionate about the continuing professional development of resources and ensuring provision of cutting edge training within a world class purpose built facility.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in relevant Engineering or Management subject, or relevant career experience in a similar capability development role.
  • Qualifications around people development or training design would be advantageous.
  • NEBOSH, IOSH or similar would be desirable.

Security Clearance:

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain SC clearance level for this role.
