About the Opportunity: The Executive Education Department at the D'Amore-McKim School of Business provides live in-person and virtual Executive Development programs for Corporate, Government and Non-Profit organizations. We leverage the strengths of faculty to organize and deliver World-Class programming that expands the mental horizons of participants and provides practical and useful tools that they can apply immediately to improving their performance on the job. We engage all levels of leaders from the first time to leader to the seasoned CEO and everything in between.
The Director of Business Development will help execute DMSB's Executive Education growth strategy and work with business teams tasked with ambitious growth goals who execute complex sales processes. The Director of Business Development will manage our base of potential clients, which exists across a wide variety of business sizes and industry verticals. The Director of Business Development will also lead cross-functional teams to reach out to a variety of potential clients. A successful candidate will be carrying their own quota as well as coaching a team of account executives (i.e., a player coach role). To maximally leverage the opportunity in front of us, the Director of Business Development will need to collaborate with Northeastern's other departments, schools and centers to expand our networks of relationships and potential customers. This will allow us to generate and maintain an opportunity engine for our pipeline.
The Director of Business Development will be able to direct a cross-flow of business traffic - from custom programs to open enrollment and vice-versa, growing both businesses together. The Director of Business Development will operate simultaneously at a tactical and at a strategic level. They will be both a leader and a connection-builder and will possess a deep understanding of the impact of industry needs in a wide variety of business contexts. The Director of Business Development must demonstrate executive presence and speak the language of business, finance, and leadership.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:
- Corporate Engagement (50%): Cultivate and maintain relationships with corporate partners to uncover future collaboration opportunities in alignment with DMSB Executive Education mission as it grows and diversifies. Put together proposals, program pitches, and convert leads and opportunities into confirmed programs (existing partnerships).
- Internal Strategic Partnerships (25%): Drive and nurture deep and trusted relationships with key Northeastern University stakeholders who are responsible for corporate partnership to ensure DMSB is a primary destination for new opportunities, including but not limited to Northeastern University's strategic partnership officers and campus deans in the global campus network, the Roux Institute, advancement, leadership in other NU Schools and Colleges, as well as with deputies in the President's Office, Provost's Office, and Chancellor's Office. Partner with internal constituents to put together proposals, program pitches, and convert leads and opportunities into confirmed programs (existing partnerships). Collaborate internally with faculty to conceptualize innovative programs, projects, and initiatives.
- Engagement Events (5%): Plan and execute engaging corporate engagement events, facilitating meaningful interactions between stakeholders and resulting in lead generation. Collaborate with stakeholders to develop event agendas and secure speakers. Utilize events to showcase DMSB strengths and expertise to corporate partners and industry leaders.
- Global New Initiatives and Market Intelligence (5%): Identify emerging trends in new regions or sectors through thorough market research. Benchmark against other executive education programs in the area.
- Strategic Planning, Communication and Leadership (15%): Develop a business development team and manage a team of account executives. Work on marketing, website, social media, podcasts and other materials to promote corporate engagement and awareness of the value proposition of DMSB Executive Education.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or greater, advanced degree preferred and at least 10 years of B2B solution selling experience; experience originating and scaling high-performing sales teams from the ground up.
- Ability to develop top-performing sales and business development representatives.
- The agility, creativity, and flexibility to accomplish goals within a startup-like environment.
- Strong understanding of how to navigate large organizations.
- Effective communication skills and executive presence.
- Proficiency with budgeting, forecasting, and managing operations within a complex organization.
- Proficient in modern sales tools (e.g., HubSpot, SalesForce).
- Demonstrated ability to achieve revenue targets in a B2B sales environment.
- Able to build the infrastructure to make the organization efficient in business development including facilitating data driven decision-making, creating dashboards, and making forecasts.
- Ability to build long-term value-driven relationships with stakeholders at customer organizations, existing relationships with data practitioners and industry leaders a plus.
