Head of Data Science

At Morrisons, data sits at the heart of everything we do. As we continue to innovate and grow, we’re looking for a Head of Data Science to lead a crucial part of our Data team. This role will report directly to our Director of Data and Analytics and play a key role in driving data driven decision making across the business. In today’s fast-paced retail world, data is more important than ever. From improving stock availability to reducing waste, shaping loyalty schemes, and understanding our customers’ shopping habits, data plays a vital role in ensuring we deliver value, efficiency, and the best possible experience for our customers. As our Head of Data Science, you will oversee the Data Science done across the business and lead by example, by showing our colleagues exactly how to apply specific methods and techniques where required. You will work specifically on problems relating to operational efficiency and customer segmentation. Our team of data scientists are split across two broad areas: Machine Learning & AI Development – A cutting edge team of innovators who work closely with our partners such as Google, to drive business wide innovation through AI and machine learning by building core models and processes that are used across Morrisons Operational Data Science Support – A group of data scientists who work directly with teams across the business – such as Supply Chain, Marketing, and Commercial to analyse data, create models that feed our Data Products and enable us to make predictions and recommendations that inform our strategic decision making. What you’ll be doing You’ll take technical oversight of our data science work and provide mentorship and enable our Data Scientists to succeed. You’ll develop their capabilities, set clear strategies, and create an environment where innovation and data excellence thrive. You’ll be the bridge between raw data and business impact, using insights to drive key initiatives, such as improving availability, reducing waste, and enhancing our loyalty scheme. You’ll ensure our data is a key driver in achieving commercial goals Working closely with our Director of Data, you’ll contribute to shaping the overall data strategy for Morrisons. You’ll also work on big projects that shape the future of retail. What we’re looking for: You’ve led teams of data scientists and analysts, can demonstrate how you’ve coached and enabled a high performing team and you can translate complex data into actionable business insights using machine learning and artificial intelligence You understand the power of data in driving strategic improvements and commercial value, ideally in sectors like retail, food, or FMCG You’re not just technically strong – you also know how to apply that knowledge in a way that delivers results for the business You are capable of communicating your ideas across the business in a compelling and simple way and can explain complex concepts effortlessly We’re looking for someone who understands our industry.
