Position: Extended Day Nurse

Location: Cunniff, Hosmer, and Lowell Elementary Schools in Watertown, MA

Reports to: Director of Community Education

Department: Community Education

Schedule: Minimum of 2 days/week, 2:15-6:00 PM daily. Preference for 3-5 days/week, 2:15-6:00 PM. Additional hours on district elementary early release days, 12:00-6:00 PM.

Pay Rate: $42.00 per hour

Summary: Watertown Community Education is a self-sustaining program of the Watertown Public Schools that provides quality enrichment programs and courses for children, adults, and families. The Extended Day Program provides a safe, nurturing environment after school for children in kindergarten through Grade 5 from 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM daily. Activities are provided that challenge each child to explore, discover, create, and grow.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide nursing services to students in grades Pre-K through 5 during the Extended Day Program.
  • Communicate with families regarding student illnesses, symptoms, injuries, and care given.
  • Ensure student health plans, including but not limited to allergy plans, asthma action plans, seizure action plans, etc. are up-to-date for all students and followed during Extended Day Program hours as appropriate/applicable.
  • Ensure any emergency medications including but not limited to Epi-Pens, inhalers, and Diastat, are current, on-site, and accessible to program staff and administrators as needed.
  • Assist students with personal care tasks as needed which may include but are not limited to toileting, diapering, feeding, etc.
  • Maintain logs of care administered and complete other forms and documentation as required by the District.
  • Attend field trips as needed.
  • Flexibility to change school locations as needed throughout the year to ensure we have adequate nurse coverage where the greatest student need is.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Extended Day Program Extended Day Site Coordinator, and/or Assistant Director or Director of Community Education.

Professional Commitment:

The Extended Day Nurse is required to work a minimum of 2 days per week. 3-5 day per week schedules are preferred. The Extended Day Program Support Assistant is required to attend the following periodic meetings: Monthly or as-needed meetings with the Extended Day Site Coordinator and/or Community Education Assistant Director and/or Director. Attend annual mandatory program orientation and training days.

Qualifications:

  • BSN or RN license is strongly preferred.
  • Experience as a school nurse preferred: preference will be given to candidates with pediatric expertise and experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience with Type 1 Diabetes care and monitoring and insulin management.

Annual Professional Development Requirement:

  • CPR / First Aid Certification.
  • Monthly Community Education Meetings.
