At the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, a group of passionate and determined people work to design, develop, manufacture and race the cars with the aim of fighting for world championships each and every year. Whether working in our Operations, Technical, Race or Business Support functions, we are all in and aspire to build the greatest team in the history of our sport. Every individual plays their part. No stone is left unturned in the chase for every tenth of a second.
We have an exciting opening for a Research and Development Design Engineer to join our R&D group. You’ll be part of a team of engineers responsible for the verification and validation of all car systems.
About The Role: As a Research and Development Design Engineer you will take specific responsibility for design projects involving prove-out testing of suspension and powertrain components within our test environments (such as our 7-post rig and sub-system dynos), and homologation of safety critical components such as the chassis.
Key Accountabilities (Duties):
- Responsible for the design of interfaces between car components and test rigs to enable performance testing, reliability prove-out or production sign-off.
- Designing of “Proof of Concept” installations to demonstrate the validity of a new technology or supplier.
- Application of engineering calculations to support your design work in pursuit of “right first time”. This will include hand calculations and the use of finite element analysis.
- Supporting the capture of requirements and development of specifications for new testing facilities and capabilities.
- Assisting in the coordination of design and manufacturing programmes and with the testing and calibration of equipment.
- Supporting in-house tests as required, especially for first-off tests of components.
- Assisting with commercialisation of our high-end test facilities.
- Responsibility for feedbacks associated with test rigs. This involves working on immediate containments for issues and developing long term countermeasures to ensure that each time we perform a test it is better than the last.
- Supporting the race team through the design of pit stop and garage equipment.
Candidate Profile:
Essential:
- Mechanical Engineering Degree or similar qualification at 2:1 level or above.
- Demonstrable experience of working within a design engineering role in a high-end technical environment (including but not limited to motorsport, aerospace, automotive).
- Capable of designing and developing engineering systems quickly, accurately and in a manner appropriate for ease of manufacture and assembly.
- Proficient use of a 3D CAD system for modelling parts and creating drawings to BS8888.
- Comfortable working to tight timelines and demanding schedules.
- Broad engineering knowledge of mechanical systems, electromechanical systems, pneumatics, hydraulics, and structural consideration in design.
- Able to manage parallel projects and assign the correct priority to each while keeping a flexible and pragmatic view regarding when priorities need to change.
- Able to demonstrate a solid level of first principles understanding of mechanics, and problem-solving skills that give an ability to think on your feet.
- Communicative and collaborative skills to deliver effective cross-departmental results.
- You adopt a flexible approach to working hours, along with a ‘can do’, ‘team playing’ attitude.
- Curious, committed to continuous learning, and ability to adapt quickly to change.
Desirable:
- Competent user of Catia 3DX.
- Ideally, you have some surfacing knowledge.
- Data analysis and visualisation within MES ATLAS 10.
