About the role
The chief sub editor is a critical leadership position within our editorial team. Every word that the public sees under the Monocle banner goes through the subbing desk, from the stories in the magazine to the descriptions of our radio programmes and the menus in our cafés. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that they are all accurate and adhere to Monocle’s tone of voice.
Alongside managing the production of 10 issues of Monocle magazine a year, special issues, newspapers and promotional material, you will also have oversight of commercial products and our digital offering, across daily email newsletters and our website. We have a team of passionate subeditors based in London and Tokyo as well as remote freelancers.
The successful candidate can demonstrate:
- At least five years’ experience of managing a subs desk for a national newspaper or magazine across print and digital.
- A comprehensive knowledge of InDesign.
- Adopts a methodical and organised approach and can work quickly and accurately when faced with multiple deadlines.
- Writes snappy headlines and engaging standfirsts.
- Has supreme confidence in their grammar and spelling.
- Can define our house style and tone and ensure that the wider team employs it.
- Communicates effectively and confidently with section editors, writers and other production departments.
- Is willing to be flexible with their hours – there are some late nights and production weeks include Saturdays.
- Is willing to work in our London office five days a week.
