Highways Structures Technician – Grade 5

Join Manchester City Council's Highways Service team as a Highways Structures Technician. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to major projects aligned with the Greater Manchester Transport Strategy 2040 and National Transport Strategies. If you’re passionate about urban development and infrastructure, this position will allow you to play a key role in shaping the future of Manchester's transport landscape.

The Highways Service in Manchester has a key role to play in the evolution of our city, making sure our structural assets are maintained and are high-quality, safe, and sustainable. The Council’s stock of highway bridges (900nr) are maintained to a standard of inspection that meets or exceeds the risk-based interval requirements for the Inspection of Highway Structures. If you’re successful, you’ll join a team of professionals pushing forward a high standard of service delivery, healthy, safe, sustainable, and accessible highway services within the city.

Day-to-day of the role:

  • Assist in developing technical schemes that meet current standards and specifications, ensuring compliance with legal and statutory requirements.
  • Prepare technical designs, contract documents, and reports for various projects, keeping line management informed of progress.
  • Liaise with internal and external colleagues, consultants, agencies, and stakeholders to ensure effective project delivery.
  • Participate in the planning, organisation, and implementation of projects and programmes of work.
  • Conduct site inspections of highway structures and supervise both internal and external contractors.
  • Implement health and safety procedures, including adherence to CDM regulations 2015.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • BTec Higher in Civil Engineering or a similar qualification, complemented by relevant post-qualification experience.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of effectively conveying information across various platforms to a diverse audience.
  • Analytical skills with an understanding of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, Model Contract for Highway Works, and CDM 2015 Regulations.
  • Proven problem-solving skills with the ability to devise creative solutions and make informed decisions.
  • Effective planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Financial management understanding, particularly in relation to design and construction cost implications.
